Hey everyone first off I’ve only been at blade forums for a few months but you guys are all very welcoming and have good advice it’s a nice community for us knife nuts. My wife is about to have our first child and money will be tighter and she has never been a fan about my collection and I think though I only have 22 it’s getting to the end of my collecting days a long break is in order! I have a budget of $400 and am looking for suggestions for a final fixed blade I’m sure I will get the odd under $100 blade from time to time but yeah give me some advice guys what blade do I really need, what classic shall it be?? Cheers from down under!

I have no idea about the knife, but congratulations on the baby! Becoming a father is a life-changing event and I hope he or she brings you and your wife a lot of joy!

Congrats on the baby!!!

Consider taking part in the BF forum knife this year

Voting on the configuration is presently taking place

I second the custom knife idea. If it's going to be the last for a while, why not make it one you designed? Oh yea, and congrats on the bundle of giving things up ; I mean Joy. :p

I vote for keeping that $400 in the bank because having a baby can get complicated and expensive quickly and if you don't need it in three or four years you've got $400 plus interest plus whatever else you managed to get in the tally to get something really nice.

Congrats. Whens the due date? For my first fathers day my daughter got me a knife. Well she didn’t actually buy it but you know what I mean. When she’s old enough it will be her first knife.

Wait until your kid is born and then get something from CRK with the same "born on" date. Pass it down to your kid once they are responsible enough to take care of it.

Kinda hard to argue with this one, really.

But I'd also say go and get a custom.

Spartan Blades Horkos is next on my list. It just looks cool man.

First, congrats on the little one! I have four--hang in there man, and have fun with your family!

Second... last fixie for a while??? Let me throw a few suggestions out there:

Winkler II Field Knife--truly a tough as nails, excellent all-arounder...

Lon Humphrey Kephart, forged 3v... OMG, what an excellent knife; it has done it all, and it looks nearly new! And the forged 3v is nothing short of phenomenal. Any of Lon's knives would be a great choice, BTW.

Finally, if you like something smaller, a Fiddleback Sneaky Pete. 3.75" of lightsaber-like slicing capability, and an excellent wood carver.

Congrats on the baby! And yes baby's cost more then you plan on ... but if you're positive you have the $400.00 disposable cash then I would look at some of the custom makers on the forums ...

without knowing what your uses will be this is just off the top of my head for my tastes ... have a look at several makers to see what you like ...

Carl Colson ... TK Steingass ... John April ... AVigil ... make some beautiful knives ...

JK Knives makes some very good knives ... not as flashy as some but made to use and well worth it and well below your $400.00 budget ...

and there are many others I just listed some of my favorites ...

If you want a harder use knife Carothers Performance Knives are great knives just have to catch a Friday sale or watch close for one to come on the exchange ...

And the CRK Sebenza with the date of birthday is always a great option for a folder ...

And for production fixed blades I can highly recommend Winkler Knives ... they aren't for everyone but I really use the ones I have ...

Fiddleback Forge may be another to check out some nice blades also ...

Good luck and again Congrats on the baby!

Congrats! With a 7 and 5 year old, I know that things will change in ways you cannot imagine, but it is (almost) all good.

For advice, after reading this thread, I'm torn between recommending : a college account, a custom knife, a Bradford Guardian 3, 3.5, or 4 (my contribution, I only have the 3 myself so far), or a rainy day/extra diaper fund (those things are expensive). All of the options have their merits. The responsible adult in me says college/rainy day fund, while the kid in me says Guardian or custom blade. If I had the chance knowing what I know now, I'd probably get 2 matching $150 knives, one for me and one for the kiddo when they are ready plus $100 for something super-special for mama, repeat as necessary for later family additions :~) The gift for mama is for a very good reason: she knows where you sleep and where your knives are.

The Guardian3:

For some reason, sharing this again seems fitting: :-)

Good luck and enjoy.

Congrats on the baby Hermit!

I'll echo the others. Treat yourself to a custom from one of our makers. Don't forget, you can always ask them to modify one of their knives if you want something changed. It sounds like you can wait a little until delivery (pun intended).
