Well I have always been into knives and I bought a Camillus 709 from SMKW on the cheap about 15-20 years back. I ended up giving it to my mom. It ended up being her favorite knife (of only a few) and she carried it all the time.

Mom and I were traveling together and we had a car wreck about 6 years ago. She somehow lost the knife in the wreck or aftermath. She could only figure it fell out of her pocket and into the road.

Well I started the search and I found another 709 with slightly different handle scale colors on eBay.

I presented it to my mom for her birthday a couple years ago, in a little wooden box I made just for her and the occasion.

This is that knife. Moms passed on from cancer now, but the knife and box is included in my most cherished possessions.

The box is locust wood, reclaimed from an old fence that was included in some firewood I bought. The base is cherry. The drawer is cedar and locust. Finish is formbys rung oil, at I’d guess a dozen coats.

Thanks for reading.

"Love" it without the grin on the icon.

Thanks for the kind words and all the “likes” everyone.

Locutus D'Borg Locutus D'Borg , I didn’t mean to well you up. But I’m glad it touched you.

Been not quite a year since I lost Mom. It’s been mighty hard on me. I’ve looked at that knife many an hour. She was always there for me, and I tried to be for here. I miss her fiercely.

Hello,

It's a great story and I fully understand your relation with this memory of your mother.
Here is my mother's knife. This peanut has been made by a friend knife maker when she explained him how boring was to open the pack of water bottles. It's was always in her bag.

Thanks for sharing with me. That is a neat little knife.

I appreciate the kind words. I forgot to mention in the original post, that after Mom lost the first 709, I had found her a case tuxedo knife. I got it from a local indoor flea market store and cleaned it up and presented it to her. She was happy enough at the onset, well mom being mom, that changed to unhappiness. The little case wouldn’t do and she said why don’t I find her one like she had before. So that’s how it came about. I searched eBay probably 2 yeas before I found one. My wife claimed the little case after mom passed. I’ll try to dig it up for an interview.

I'm sorry for the loss of your mother, but I am glad that you have such a meaningful item of remembrance.

My little brother had always loved my swords (he was much younger than me), and in order to keep him from playing with them when he was little, I promised him that if he never touched my swords, then I would buy him one when he was 13. He never forgot the promise, and kept reminding me. So when he was 13, I bought him a sword. When my brother died in a car accident, his mother sent me his sword. It is a bittersweet, but cherished, item of remembrance.

May your mother's memory be a blessing.

Thank you for sharing that with me.

Here is a little plate I made mom. It was originally a bowl, and this is actually just the bottom of that. It had been knocked off and broken on the side. I found it when cleaning out moms house. So I took it and cut the bottom off and made a little plate. I use it just as shown, a knife catch tray.
