My Dad bought me the Massad Ayoob for an early Xmas present, because he knew I wanted one and they are a bit hard to find, so he went ahead and got this one. The Captain and Chinook I bought.

Nice. I have been thinking about a Captain too. Let us know what you think about it please - Ed

I wonder how the captain handles, love the idea of it but in terms of real life application I dont see a use for it. What are your impressions? Oh and the Chinook is always an awesome sight!

The Captain has a lot of blade (wide and heavy) for it's size.
It's very sharp on the main edge and the front. I think it would make a terrific skinning knife, it has a well fitted liner lock. I can't imagine it giving under normal and even moderately heavy use. It's unusual for sure but handles and feels great IMO.

I think two years ago Tactical knife magazine had an article of the Captain. The author tested it in cutting sticks, EDC etc and said that he was VERY surprised! The knife could handle anything he could though of and had no issues.

Congrats Jill! You have a great collection!

The best way to describe the hallowed C-111 CAptain is to just describe it for what it is.>>> The Captain model is truly a convex straight razor. It is a self defense gem extraordinaire

I just wish to the Spyderco hierarchy that they would please make that blade available in serrated Spyderedge :thumbup:

Those are truly 3 of Spyderco's hall of famers. You got excellent taste in blades Jill. My envy meter is going crazy even though I have 2 of those I still would like to have back up units of all 3 of those bad boys

Jill,
I agree that the lock is well-fitted in the sense that it is secure, but what do you think about how much (i.e. how little) is exposed to disengage it? I too just bought a Captain and find that disengaging its linerlock is not the most comfortable experience. Other than that I love this knife.

I don't find it to be at all hard to disengage.
My fingers aren't so big and it's not hard to get behind the liner. That may make a big difference.

+1 on the Captain being a great knife. I even prefer it to the Mini-Manix (original). I got mine after seeing too many pictures of it. That thing is just so unique, I can't wait to see what the next Breeden knife will be

The Captain is like many Spyderco models in regard to the fact that it has a specific range of cutlery uses. You can't use the Captain for cutting chores that you would use a Rescue model for in most cases. It is a very unique blade design intended primarily for Self Defense use from what I've been told..

Every knife design has it's limitations and uses that it's particular design excels in or was intended to provide for a specified cutting job. The Captain model may be the most misunderstood Spyder ever. Instead of trying to see what the Captain model could be used for many who misunderstand it just simply dismiss it as an "odd ball" design strictly for novelty purposes. Nothing could be further from the truth.

That's why Spyderco takes cutlery to the next level and does it so well. The Captain is truly an SD masterpiece and one I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of. But that blade could even be better with a Spyderedge to be sure
