Bought this at a pawn shop, its a case xx red bone, was wondering if there a way of knowing what year it was made, and if I should clean it or not, in if yes any tips

You can find the way to date it pretty easily, just Google "case dating system" and it will be one of the first links. It goes by the tang stamp. As for cleaning it doesn't look to be bad shape, say be just use some mineral oil and give it a good wash with a rag if you plan to use it

That tang stamp shows it between 1940 and 1964 I believe only the 1964 had a lanyard hole and the earlier ones did not. Here is a link to Case tang stamps for dateing Case knives http://www.wrcase.com/case_college/tang_stamps/
And here is a link for more info on your particular knife. http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=32292 As far as cleaning the knife wash with soap and water I use Dawn the dry it and blow it out with compressed air. Oil the pivot with 3 in 1 oil or similar get some Flitz brand metal Polish and hand buff the blade then but a thin coating of mineral oil on the blade. Good luck.

It was made between 1949 and 1964. The Case XX tang stamp was used 1940 to 1964 but they didn't start stamping with the model numbers until 1949. For Collector Value, don't clean it. If it's a user, have at it.

Thanks for the info guys, It going in my little collection I just don't want it to get worse

Curious to what you paid for it at a pawn shop. Ive found a few deals, but most of the pawn shops I've been to research pretty heavy on collector items and price accordingly, or higher than second market.

Cost might be irrelevant in this case (pun intended), I'm just curious is all.

Wipe the blades and springs with a rag that's damp (not soaked) with mineral oil. Keep wiping the surfaces until they no longer dirty the rag. That's all that's necessary. If you want to use it, then sharpen the blade. Nothing else is necessary.

Nice knife.

I don't mind saying the price, It cost me $65 plus taxes

This is my only Case XX i got it in a deal for another knife, i believe it is referred to as a "Boys Knife" , the thing that interests me is that in all the time i have been looking on this site i do not believe i have seen another picture of one except when i first got this one, am i missing something or is there some sort of curse on these little guys ?
