I looked at the BM Snody Activator and thought the lines were mighty appealing, and then looked at the price tag: Too expensive. Darn, got to make my own. I found a piece of Uddeholm UHB-11 tool steel and cut out a knife I thought would look and feel nice in the hand, still imitating the incredible lines of the activator. This was my very first attempt at heat treating steel (I know that tool steels aren't that easy for beginners like me). Heating was done with two camping stove burners (Primus and Trangia) pointed to the steel and quench in water. Tempering at 200 degrees celcius for one hour. I have no idea how hard this now is, but a file wouldn't bite well. The blade is flat ground and the handle slabs are sheets of woven carbon fiber and hexcel texalium sheets bonded together with epoxy. This was also my first attempt at fileworking a spine. Let me know what you people think!

The sheath is still wet and unfinished in these photos. Thanks for looking!

Pretty sweet, man! How long do you figure the whole process took you, and what kind of tools did you use to make it?

I think it looks pretty good. The sheath looks "gentlemanly", like something that you would were wear with dress pants. Pretty darn cool. All in all...a great beginning.

i really like that spine, very very nice idea. what files/grinders/etc did you use to go about that spine, if you dont mind me asking.

i also didnt notice that the scales are 2 pieces joined togeather, the panels made so one has the black cf showing towards the back and the other side to the front right?

very nice work

MrPurple: I made the knife in one evening, and the handle scales were made a day before, and the heat treating was done the next day. So, three days, but not so many hours.

Blgoode: It's been in use for only a day, but so far after cutting some wood and paper and leather no problem. It was not so easy to sharpen so I guess the steel is quite hard... Time will tell.

SR_matt: I rough ground the wave patterns w/ a rotary tool and a carbide cutter and then filed everything smooth. Sanded for better shine. The handles were supposed to have the black CF to the front, but due to lack of material I ended up installing these the way they are as you described.

Thanks for all the compliments!

i think it looks great. btw what type of companies sells that white carbonfiberlooking material (and what are the different brand names), is it easy to get?

Nice looking!
Is the space between the spine and the Slab a void
or is it filled in with something dark? Are those "sex bolts" ??

TKS has a good deal of silver carbon fiber in stock. Found that out when Alice told me they were out of regular CF... :(

Great job! I personally would like to see the filework to continue out the blade. It is a pretty large pattern to end abruptly.
Just my opinion though. Once again nice job!

The silvery carbon fiber sheet was bought from Robotcombat.com marketplace. They sell all sorts of CF sheets and this piece was from a sample pack, just big enough for this knife =).

Tommegow: The space is void, but I was planning on filling it with epoxy, but that comes later.
