These two 42 Missouri Traders arrived this week. I greatly admire the traditional lockback hunter pattern, whether it be GEC, Queen, Remington or other.

The first is in black canvass micarta and the other in ivory bone.

All is good. Fit and finish are top notch and both blades were delivered shaving sharp which is not always the GEC experience.

Blade play - no discernible side to side movement. Both had some vertical play but it is minimal and you probably wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it. The bone knife was the tightest.

Here they are with 2 earlier 42s that I purchased in 2012 - one in stag and the other in ebony.

Oh man, great pics! Love the stag especially.

I'm a huge fan of the 42. The blade without a half stop opens like someone rubbed butter on it. Some of mine have a little bit of wobble to them but I can live with it. In a user knife such a thing has never bothered me a bit. They still cut what I expect them to cut. ;)

Nice collection

Yes, I agree. There is something about that model that calls to me. I like the different materials used on the different knives. I still want an Ebony model but the canvas micarta looks nice as well.

I have a non locking version with half stops. It was my first GEC and I love it.

I have a trapper and trader and prefer the trapper. I like the thickness of it, and the size is just right for me. Those are some swell knives!!

Ah the Missouri Trader. I wanted the GEC #42 so badly when I first saw pictures of it. It looked beautiful. I liked the covers. I liked the lines. I liked the blade shape. I liked that there were locking and slipjoint versions. I liked the lanyard hole. Then I saw the name...Missouri Trader. I wish they had named it something other than Missouri trader. I'm from Kansas, so there's no way I could live with myself if I carried a knife with Missouri in the name. Missouri was a slave state, so when I hear Missouri Trader I immediately think Missouri Slave Trader. Of course, anyone who isn't from Kansas probably doesn't know about Bleeding Kansas and won't have the same aversion to things pertaining to Missouri. I went to KU, where we used to have the Border War game with Missouri. The historic rivalry lives on...so that means more GEC #42 Missouri traders for the rest of you! ;)

I never would have related the name to slaves....I think more in line with fur traders...mountain men...Hawkins etc.

On the Tidioute version the term Missouri Trader'' does not appear anywhere on the knife. It is etched prominently on the blades of the earlier Northfield variant.
