Here's my latest "Hardcore Hatchet", serial #002. It's 1/4" thick 440C stainless, cryogenically treated with a 4" cutting face. Handle is green / black linen Micarta and the whole thing got a sandblasted finish. It has the new chisel feature on the corner of the blade.
I made this one was made for my friend Roger at Custom Tactical Creations and it sold for $300.00.

Let me know what you think.

Can you get the right balance in a short piece like that? That was the main problem DaveH and others had with the Swamp Rat piece which is very similar.

Cliff,
I think this one balances alot better. The extra inch in the head gives it more heft and the longer handle makes it easier to chop with. On this one I also lightened the tang (skeletonized it) so there's more weight up front. My prototype is being used in South Florida right now and by all reports it's chopping itself silly.
Thanks,
J. Place

I answered in the other forum, but I'll chime in here as well. I had the opportunity to handle the prototype before I moved from south Florida, and it handles very well for it's size. I didn't check the balance point, but it chopped well, and would make a great camping/hunting tool. With a skeletonized handle, this one can only be better!

I was surprized how well the 440C held up to chopping in very hard wood with full power swings. No chips/dings or rolled edges. The edge geometry was very good for hard woods, and the heat treat was great as well.

I really like the handles on this model. I'd never handled sand blasted micarta before, but I'm a fan now. Looks great, feels good, and no hot spots, which actually surprised me. I wish I'd thought to get my hands and the handle really soaked to check out the grip when it's wet, but I didn't, though I'd expect it to be good as well.
