I just finished a series of three pictures of nine knives...this was my favorite

Dont know if you know this, but the CKD forum has a weekly photo contest....dont win anything, but its fun. With shots like yours, you definately oughta enter. Thats an excellent shot.

Nice knives too!

JpN who are you?

:D :D :D I guess it don't matter none. But your pics of the Boses's knives are great. They are the ultimate in slipjoint makers and the pics are first rate too!!!

Best wishes

Taking pictures of knives, making knives, talking about knives & anything else to do with knives. Just like most of the other knife guys on this board?

They are stunning. Thanks for sharing them with us.

I entered my Sowbelly Photo

Here is another that like...

I will enter it next week I guess

JpN, it's obvious that your work is at a professional level--and among the elite in that group as well. Excellent portraits of high class models for sure! Your choices of background materials/settings are equally artistic and well thought-out.

Without revealing proprietary trade secrets, is it possible for you to give us photo hobbyists some technical data about the photo's? For example, the make/format of the camera used, lens, settings, lighting, etc. Thanks.

Thanks toothed for the nice words. I hope you are not too disappointed when I tell you how I take the pics I do. First of all I need to tell you that I was at a Blade Show about 5 or 6 years ago when I hired Jim Weyer to do a picture for me. He charged me $125 for a blurry picture…this set me on fire.

I then tried to do the pictures myself, using my Nikon, but did not get the results that I wanted.

A while later Tony Bose wanted me to take a quick digital pic of a knife to send to a customer. A quick job, just to send an idea of what the knife looks like in an email.

At that time Digital cameras were not what they are today, Without really thinking about it I just simply placed the knife on my Flatbed Scanner while we were goofing around…We were both blown away by what we saw.

It showed a lot more that I ever thought it would. From that point on I have used the scanner and done a ton of Tony and Rees Bose Knives.

I simply move knives around on the glass to get rid of dark spots and place different things in the background and scan the knives. The mirror polished blades give me some problems. Luckily most of the Bose knives either have a ground finish or a hand rub finish, both do not reflect as a polished blade does.

It really simple…put the knife down, and throw some thing behind it. If you leave the scanner cover off you will get a black background.

Try it..and have some fun

JpN, you gotta be kidding me! A scanner? Whoa, who would've thunk.
I still can't figure out how you got those rocks in the sowbelly photo onto the scanner bed. (A photo background of the rocks laid on top of the knife, maybe? Nah, it looks 3-dimensional).

I'm aware of Jim Weyer's excellent work and it appears to me that you've moved right up there with the best of 'em.

You're such a lucky guy to be chosen by the Boses to do portraits of their knives. Keep up the good work and post your pictures anytime--I think the others on this forum will agree with me when I say that "we can't get enough."

My wife loves flowers...she didn't understand why I brought them home to her one day...

"My wife loves flowers...she didn't understand why I brought them home to her one day..." rotflmao (sounds like something out of a beer commercial).

Nice. btw, do you have an online photo album somewhere? Also, have you taken the precaution to have your work copyrighted?
