well, i'm sure some of you remember awhile back when i ordered a husky hatchet and it seemed that i was the first here to get the 'new' style. since i didn't care for it that much i just hung it in the tool shed and forgot about it. months ago i picked up a 19" 'boys axe' handle, i didn't need it, but the grain was damn near perfect so i bought it for later use if i could find a head for it.
i got to thinking the other day and figured out that it wasn't the hatchet i didn't like it was the handle...so...see pics below!
i also made a sheath for it yesterday (be nice, it is only the second sheath i have ever made. the first was a GB style for a friend). the sheath is a little rough, but it will have to do until after hunting season because suddenly this little hatchet that i hated so much has been reborn into one of, if not my favorite.
i plan on using it later this week around camp and in the field when i go archery elk hunting and will give a report on performance.
thanks for looking. enjoy the pics...

Best regards

I agree with Robin the whole way around. Great looking overall. Feels good to take a tool like that, maybe one that you just aren't to enthusiastic about for whatever reason, and then turn it into something special. Well done.

I have elk season the end of October. You can send it down and I will try it out for you. Seriously, I like what you did with the hatchet. The sheath looks very functional and the kind you need on the mountains and in the elk woods. Great job.

Yep, looks like a much better handle now. And that sheath ain't bad at all (I don't mess with leather. I know where my skillset lies, and it ain't there!). Gorgeous background! I remember seeing green plants some time in the distant past...

thanks for the kind words guys!
i was in a hurry this afternoon (went grouse hunting. didn't see crap) so i forgot to give stats;
the head is 1lb 6 1/2 oz., the overall length wound up being 16 1/2" (took quite a bit of fitting), overall weight (w/out sheath) is 1lb 14oz. with sheath; 2lb 2 1/2 oz.
the original handle weight was 9 oz..
thought you fellows would like to know...

Nice work. I think it turned out great. Sheath looks good as well. I bet you will like it even more now with the mods. It will probably be more useful with the boys axe handle.
