my buffalo, drawn from a photo (no tracing allowed!) hope i'm posting this in the right forum, either this or the gallery:)
anyway this particular medium has fascinated me for a couple of years now so about a year ago i decided to try it, i'm an artist in life and as a job (job=McArt) anyway i'm not gifted in the ways of rendering wildlife (hadnt attempted it in about 20 years!) but i did this piece for a friend, its got some issues but i think he'll dig it. Its my fourth scrimshaw piece. This is on Corian (plan on trying a more natural material in the future but if i screw up the corian its only 2 bucks a tile!)
Untitled
3"x4.5"
scrimshaw/corian
just thought i'd share something not directly knife related (at least not this one:D)
cheers

Good work, time to do a handle. Keep at it, you definitely master it. Wish I could do that.:grumpy:

thanks, ive been an artist forever:D just not a wildlife artist, kinda new for me
we'll see were i take it as these (just finished an elk) were for a friend, not my normal style or subject matter
thanks

Get in tight with a bladesmith, I'm thinking skinners with animal engraved buttstocks. Maybe rifle stocks too.

HI Ivan, my name is Mark. And I like your art, alot. I would like to have some of it. I also like your use of the Corian. What I have in mind is, a line carving of my little ship, the cutter Patricia A, plus the name of corse. I haven't made The knife, yet. It will be a rigging knife, fixed blade. I would think you have along waiting list. Because you are good. And I for one don't like to rush, so when you get a chance could we talk? Thanks Mark. 562 618 7223

welcome to blade forums!
Hey Mark thanks for the kind words, i really havent been doing this very long and would need alot more under my belt before i was comfortable taking a commission. I'm just not at that point yet, sorry.
all the best

Ivan, you are modest. That is a virture. And I understand about the commission thing. However you are that good. If you are interested in seeing what I want, please go to the Myrechin web site www.myrechin.com ... Look for a knife that has a simple scribe with the name Orgon on it and a profile of a small cutter rigged sail boat. I forget where it is, but it should not be hard to find. I think it is under the knives as art part. I mean if you are interested. I think It would at least provide some new thoughts for some new projects. Ivan you have inspired me to try my hand at scrimshaw and modesty. Mark

I personally dislike corian on knives and run from it whenever I see it. I have to admit though, that the way you finished out the edges on this piece really made a lot of difference. I like this a lot.

I understand the cost issue too. I have done a few small scrim pieces and for some reason wildlife kicks my butt. I can do landscapes, buildings, lots of things. When it comes to animals and people...no way. I just got finished with a mammoth ivory cross that I scrimmed a Celtic trinity knot on. I swear keeping up with those lines was making me crazy.

That looks good. Keep posting them as you finish them. I'd like to see those elk you did.

Thanks it was a decision made outta desperation, i had intended to cut out an oval, pretty hard to do with basic tools (hand sawing the stuff is a real pain)
Light bulb went off and out came the chisels, chiseled it out and textured (linework) the chipped out areas then inked 'em turned out kinda neat and fits the overall look:thumbup:
Thanks for the praise

Ivan, keep it up,that looks great, not too many follks doing scrimshaw:thumbup:Regards Butch

Thanks its my fourth scrimshaw piece so i can only get better:D at least i hope so, i'm hoping (need to start saving:D) for a patch knife in 09 :D
hope all is well with you!

Ivan, another inexpensive alternative you might consider is white paper micarta. I have done a little bit of scrim on that and it doesn't have the plastic feel of corian. Although, like I already said, yours looks good.

What kind of patch knife are you wanting to get? Something that you can scrim??

so nope, ya cant scrim one of butch's patch knives, they dont need my embellishment they are just right all on their own:)
thanks for the heads up on micarta, i had read about people using it i may try it, ive also used an imitation ivory from mascraft that worked pretty well
cheers
