My latest tabletop khukuri wood display...

Some of you have seen the simple tabletop displays that I have made for my knives.

This latest one is very similar to the one that I recently showed here on this forum, but I added some metal embellishments to this one.

My feelings are mixed on how it turned out. While it may have achieved in some way what I wanted, which was to add something to take away the plain look of the previous display, my additions may have made it too gaudy.

In any case, it's just another variation in what I expect to be a long string of me trying out different things.

Nice... the rate you are going you are soon to put sword of shivas and brass inlaids on your display. :)

LOL!!
Well, I don't know if I will go that far, but I believe I may use other woods (instead of the basic stuff I've been using thus far), and will likely play with the pattern itself. In the end, they will all be hand made, all hopefully unique, and hopefully worthy of displaying these knives.

Once I get into collecting Kothimoras and such, then I may do away a bit with the more simple looks in exchange for something that will equal the extravagance of those types of knives.
As for the basic knives, I may need to keep things toned down a bit, especially since the knife is the item really meant to be showcased, not so much it's display (at least in my opinion).

And by the way, thanks for the nice comments :)

Cool:thumbup:

I've just recently been bitten with the home improvement/building stuff bug...(if you knew me better you'd probably be picking yourself up off the floor at this point).

I may just have to try something like this myself....

Nice Jimmy. You'll be a master before long.

I hope you will try some of this yourself!
It can be fun, and more importantly you will feel a certain pride in knowing that some of your displayed items are being showcased by something "you" made with your own two hands :)

Most folks that come over to my home for the very first time are somewhat amazed to hear that many of my collection displays are built by me. That in itself leaves a great feeling, when you realize that people believe the items to have been store bought, not custom homemade.

Anyhow, it's also neat that what you have is a truly one of a kind in the world :)

Very nice. I like it. I've also liked your other work, particularly the glass encased ones. I'm thinking of doing that for some small peices that I have.

Thanks for the look.

I think it's a beautiful stand. Making your own display stands is a great idea.

Personally, though, I think the metal is a bit much. This is a question of personal taste, of course, but I like to keep things a bit more subdued. If you wanted to sell one to me, I'd ask you to drop the metal trim, but keep the furniture nails -- using antiqued brass finish instead of white metal. This is because:
A) Antique brass has a darker look and more yellow in it, so it complements the wood better.
B) The pins and nails on the stand are part of the stand's fittings, just like the bolster and buttcap are part of the fittings on the khuk. Since the khuk fittings are usually brass, I think matching the stand's fittings in brass would work well.
C) Antiqued brass is less reflective, more muted than 'white metal'. Since the stand is only there to show off the knife, I would prefer to keep it more subtle.
D) Damnit, I just like antiqued brass!

Anyway, those are the thoughts of a real picky guy. :o Don't take this as criticism, I'm just talking about my own preferences. You did a real nice job there! Good work, buddy!

I agree with you.
Your findings are pretty much the same reasons that I felt the look to be a little bit "too much".

Once all was installed, I felt the aluminum trim seemed too modern looking, along with the chrome plated furniture tacks.

Even though I would not do it the same way again, this one now has a home displaying that Angkhola khukuri in the photo.

I too like the antique brass and polished brass look, and the only reason these chrome tacks came into the scene is because I already had about 5 packs of them in my accessory bag (just begging to be used). Another one of my sometime drawbacks, I tend to improvise by using a lot of whatever I already have.
As for the silver colored aluminum strip, I was at a local store and ran into them. Then a light went on in my head. I actually searched to see if they had it in a brass finish, but only the silver was offered.
Next thing you know, I'm buying it in hopes that it may look better than I think, (ok, so I was wrong) LOL!!! :)

There will definitely be other displays made, I just can't help myself ;)

Here is the other similar display I made that has no embellishments whatsoever:

Here is a plain unembellished display I made for a few Biltong khukuri knives:

And here is my initial khukuri tabletop display that I made for a letter opener sized knife:

Again, I want to thank you all for your comments :)

Plexiglass is really cool, but my home environment is very traditional, and therefore the modern look of plexiglass stands may really clash with it.

I may get some Walnut, Cherry, or maybe even some Mahogany wood for some of my future khukuri stands.

I'm with Jimmy in that I prefer wood construction. The plexiglass though, is going to be more neutral and allow the item to stand out differently.

Jimmy's thread reminds me of work to do. He's done this himself and I want to also. Good stuff.
