Your work always looks great Josh. I like this color for ito, also something in green.

Have you ever read/seen this fellows methodology?

Keith Larman used to occasionally post in progress shots of his tsuka work and I always found it fascinating, even though not much drawn to modern work at all. I do appreciate all the work that goes into the traditional methods for Japanese swords.

Cheers

Josh,

That is excellent work - very impressive! I don't make swords and I have never seen anything like that on a handle. What exactly is the technique called? I would like to find a book on it - it looks really interesting. What are the white beads under the wrapping? My name is Renee Borek (Blankity-Blanks) and I sell wood on the knife forum. I was just looking around the forum pages tonight and saw your post. I have had several sword handle size pieces of Afzelia (snake skin) xy-lay and also some cochin rosewood that are longer sword handle size as well as other things. Do you sword makers have a special section I could show you some of the pieces I have for sale? Most of the things I am selling on the forum are standard knife handle sizes, but I would like to help the sword makers too with their needs as well. For now, we are selling our wood at wholesale cost - not retail. If I can help you or your fellow sword makers in any way please let me know how I can do that. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much i like your handle.

Take Care,

Renee

The 'white beads' are probably plastic underlayment, I am not sure. Usually the color is a bit more cream. Normally the material is ''same'" or stingray skin. The bumps are dentition scales on the skin.

Per the craftsman, "full wrap samegawa". Not plastic.

Thank you for posting your comments. the white material under the silk cord is genuine rayskin applied in a "full wrap" around the entire wooden core.
I can wrap handles like this in a variety of materials including silk, cotton, leather, suede, nubuck, doeskin, etc.
here are some additional pictures of the KC 26a pictured above.
