I'm always changing my pocket kits around and adding this or robbing that from each one. I have a couple of trips coming up and decided to make up a new very minimal kit. I wanted one just with a few essentials that I could toss in my pocket to give me some security wherever I am.

For this kit I decided I wanted a new knife, my criteria was that I wanted a corkscrew ( one of my trips is urban and might require some wine opening plus I like these for undoing knots when making traps etc ). I also wanted the largest blade I could fit in the kit and it needed to be thin . After some searching I settled on the Victorinox Porter as perfect for my requirements.

Also in the kit I wanted the largest ferro-rod I could fit. The one I got is a fair bit larger than an LMF, I removed the head and it fit perfectly.Added a small LMF striker as well.

Other contents :

A few Bandaids.
A few Steri strips.
P38 can opener.
Safety pin.
Fish hook.
Trolling line.
2 cotton pads.
3 storm proof matches.
Old credit card with Duct tape wrapped around.
Ranger bands.
Small Fox whistle.
Birthday candle.

I think that's the lot although I may well remember something else later, LOL !

You call that firesteel minimal? What happened to the itty bitty one you almost used all the way up? :p

Nice kit. I haven't changed mine in a while. About time to re-do it.

Nice pocket kit ! Wheres the pain meds (Asperin) & Allergy meds(Benadryl)...never know when you will get a headache, tooth ache....etc or maybe a bee/wasp sting or spider bite or allergic reaction to something ? ....Just sayin !

Yeah I hear ya.......although I was keeping this very minimal I nearly threw a few pills in but after hearing what the US border guys are like I didn't want to give them any ammo to be asking about !!!

Very similiar to the kit I carried on my trips to China, but instead of the trotline and hooks, I carried 550 cord (which could be used for a shoelace) and needles and thread and a couple of buttons for repairs. I also had a Photon light and small Bic lighter in mine. I called it my convenience kit.

I did have mine wrapped with Para-cord and had the bands on top of that to secure it. I might still do that when I go away.

+1 on the Small Bic and Photon. Just for daily use, I would lose the firesteel and if you really wanted, add a spark-lite instead. Maybe some of that flexible signal mirror added to save space and a few small safety pins. Regardless, if you use it, you should keep it in your kit and not listen to me as it is just another opinion. :)

Can't view the picture from here, but the contents look solid. It's funny that fish hooks don't get considered for "urban" kits, but they do come in handy. A few nights ago, my room key fell down between the wood walk way...about six inches and I couldn't reach them with the multitool or knife. I do carry a couple of hanks of 550-cord and in a small psuedo PSK, I have a couple of fish hooks. One of the inner 550-cord strings tied to the largest hook (and with the help of my LED light as it was dark), I was able to "fish" out my key chain.

I'll be flying up to Seattle later in June...looks like it would be a good kit for flying as well.

Well even on an urban break we did end up using my kit. My wife ended up with some really nasty blisters on her feet from all the walking so covered them over with bandaids from the kit so the shopping could continue !!!

Well 'Ol Bud...how was your First trip to "The States" ?

Very cool little break, lots of beer drinking and good food ! Got some new Asolo hiking boots ready for my Rockies trip coming up !!!

I also got to handle the TOPS Tracker 2......damn that is a cool knife, feels great in the hand, I can imagine it to be a very versatile little blade !!!!

How do you like the porter?

I am thinking about getting one, but will not be able to handle it first, but I figured for the money.....

Hey buddy, the Porter just fitted my requirements perfectly.....very thin profile, slightly shorter than a standard SAK but still with a blade large enough to do most tasks. The can opener/bottle opener combo tool is also pretty neat and I really wanted a corkscrew as I use them for undoing knots. As you say for the money it's a no brainer !!!

Nice little kit! We have similar thoughts on the bottle of wine with the mrs. that's why I switched to another SAK for urban carry. I have a klean kanteen karafe for planned excursions (and want to pick up one of their unibody bamboo lids to replace the plastic and stainless one I have) but like the corked screw for spontaneous moments :)

Thanks Pit, I appreciate the response.

I got one on order and it should be here this week. Can't wait.
