My Leatherman Squirt P4 pliers broke today.

I have carried this tool almost every day since I got it. It has been a useful companion until today. I work for a beverage distributor that sells Red Bull among many other things. I had to cut a three wide glide tray back to a two to make it fit on a shelf. Usually I would use the full size Gerber multi tool that lives in my car but I accidently left it in my Jeep after the last snow storm. So I had to make due with the P4. I was using the pliers to grab and break the plastic off in chunks. As I was working on it one of the sides of the pliers sheared off and went flying across the store where I was working. Bummer.

I love this tool because it is so easy to always have it with you. Luckily I found a Gerber hatchet in my car trunk and I learned that this was actually the perfect tool for this job for the future. I wonder though, will Leatherman replace this and if so where should I send it?

My friend said I should get a SOG instead. Any suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jon

Leatherman _may_ replace it. I would say that it is likely if you send it in under warranty.

For future reference though:
Using a very small pliers (any small pliers) with a twisting motion to bend things stresses the weakest part of the jaws. If you bend straight up/down (off the end of the pliers) it is a bit safer.

If you want slightly beefier pliers in a similarly-small package, the SOG crossgrip pliers are probably a stronger (but the other implements are not as refined).
Also, I would suggest one of the LM Juice line if you can afford to go just a big bigger. (the pliers are significantly bigger than the Squirt, but smaller than the wave/charge etc.)

Or, If you think you need more power, a large tool like a full size LM, SwissTool or SOG may be a good choice. (For the most power, a Leatherman Crunch or a SOG PowerLock are tops). But these options are large and heavy, and may be overkill...

(Go to www.leatherman.com for warranty details and how to do it).

Thanks for the info klattman. I will probably send it in and see what happens. The only reason I would like another one is because it is so small that I always had it with me. Unlike the full sized tools which I usually leave in the car. However, I feel like I understand the limitations of this tool better. I appreciate the other suggestions too.

Yep, send it in, you've got little to lose by doing so. Also, you might want to look up the SOG Crossgrip as a replacement in the meantime.
