The little L shaped pieces of metal in the handles (that keep the pliers from touching the tools and frame) bent and now the pliers hit the tools when I'm trying to close it. Has anyone else had this problem.

Waiting for my Surge to get back from Leatherman, should be back here Thursday.

I did not have the same problem as you, but the little spring that holds the removeable bits in place kept falling out. I even cleaned it up and put a drop of lock tight on it, but it did not last.

I have been a die hard leatherman fan for years, but I am thinking of trying another brand.

Going to a larger sporting good store this weekend were I hope to get my hands on some other brands of multi tools to help me decide.

If you send your surge back to leatherman they will have a new one back to you in a couple weeks, great service but it still sucks that they need to be sent in for repairs in the first place.

I agree with you. I have only had it for about a month and it hasn't even seen any hard use. I love the design for the surge and I think leatherman is awesome but if I have any more problems after they send it back I'm getting a victorinox.

My wife bought a Wave about a year ago, and she's grown to like it quite a bit on a recent camping trip. However, the little handle on the scissors mysteriously broke off somewhere along the line. I say mysteriously because they scissors have never been used. Wonder if it happens often? Anyhow, I'll be sending it in this week sometime.

After the first 6 months I had a Supertool 200, I somehow broke the end of the pliers off while trying to free a stuck bolt. I didn't put much pressure on it, but nevertheless the end of one of the tips just snapped right off. I sent it to Leatherman and had it back in tiptop shape in about a week or so. I've carried and heavily used that returned multi-tool for over 2 years now with no trouble whatsoever. Hopefully you'll be as lucky with your repair job. If not, box it up and sell that critter for something you like!

I had the exact same thing happen to my Charge XTi. I tried to straighten them with pliers once they were bent all the way down, but they broke off. I sent it back to leatherman and they replaced the tool, no questions asked. The only reason for the failure that I could think of was that the hinges were too tight and requiring too much force to close the tool, causing the little metal pieces to break

Thats exactly what it felt like on mine.

Just write leatherman a short letter explaining what happened and send it to them. They should send you a new one in a few weeks.

ups tracking site said I was to get my surge back from leatherman Thursday, now they have changed the delivery date to Monday. :(

Be sure to include your email address in your short note to leatherman when you send it back. They will email you the ups tracking number when they send it back to you. Nice of them to do. :)

My 4 day old surge had problem of knife blade hitting the inside of the handle and getting dulled. I also noticed that one of the L brackets was bent all the way down. I used pliers and straightened them, but noticed that the phillips head bit was scraped up from rubbing with the end of the pliers.

Anyway, I sent it in (my first multi tool ever, and my only one then), and got myself a used Gerber MP600 which I liked alot, and then just got a new Gerber Diesel, which I am quickly falling in love with. I hope I get my Surge back in time before I completely fall in love with my diesel.

I just got my surge back and the little L shaped pieces of metal apear to have been replaced but the pliers still hit the tools. I really think there must be some manufacturing problem in my tool. I'm really disapointed right now. I sent an email asking them to resolve the problem I'll post an update when I get a reply. Leatherman better step up to the plate if they ever want my business or support ever again.:thumbdn:

Hmmm... I've had a Surge since February, but I haven't used it yet. I bought a Charge at the same time, and that has been my EDC ever since. I guess maybe I should start using the Surge a bit. The Charge has been rock solid, and it gets used for something every day. My older Leatherman tools have been excellent performers, too. Maybe something has changed with their manufacturing process in the last year or so.

Edit: If you're looking for an alternative to Leatherman, check out the Victorinox SwissTools. I have one of those, too, and it is a mighty fine tool. Well built, smooth, and gorgeous fit and finish.

I have the Surge, Swiss Tool RS, and the Spirit. I love the Surge's blades, and have not had any prob's with it yet. The Surge, and the Swiss Tool RS, see the most use. The Spirit is the best fit and finsh of the three, (it is truly a work of art).
I would rate the three in this order.
Although i do not carry it as much, the Spirit is 1st.
The Swiss Tool RS is 2nd (very nice fit and finish), and every thing on it is usefull to me.
The Surge is 3rd. I love the Surges blades the most, but i'am not too hot on the bit exchangers.

I just got my surge back for the second time and it's fixed. I'm happy now:D even if it did take a long time.:grumpy: :D

LM seems to be really cheaping out. Everything from sheaths to overall finish of the product. I edc a Core right now and so far it has performed well, but I am seriously considering a Victorinox, something I know has not compromised in quality. :(

I own several Leathermen, older and current models. Some I like better than others, but all seem reasonably well made (sheaths are another story). I handled a Core lately and it seemed pretty solid. What leads you to think they are of lesser quality?
