I recently purchased a used FSH. Not my first Busse or INFI but the first I bought as a user.
It came with the factory edge but used and dull. Not a problem I knew that when I bought it. So I set out to decide how to sharpen this large thick blade.
I have read a lot about INFI and how it stands up to use so I knew going in I was dealing with a super steel.
So I took the knife and set it up on a edge pro and cleaned up the existing edge. Took about 20 Min's.
Off to the vacant lot and some log chopping. Well the edge of course held up well. But the chopping itself was kinda lack luster. Granted its a new to me knife and I need to learn and practice with it. Still I was not over joyed with Busse love and was just not feeling it!
So I took the knife back inside and thought about it a bit. I broke out the sand paper, sticks, and leather to thin and convex the edge.
I must say it came out VERY nicely. This maybe to the nicest convex edge I have done and I have done hundreds. I do knives for all my friends and co-workers. From Kitchen knives to "tactical Folders".
INFI is REALLY great to work with. It responds very well to sandpaper. I started out with 100 grit for the relief bevel.(Back Bevel) I took it as far back as I could with out stripping the Blade coating off to far up the blade. Except for the tip. Busse leaves those pretty blunt. I thought about that and left it thicker than the rest of the knife. I am proud of that because it was my first "on purpose" compound edge and the transition is invisible.
I worked through a series of grits until I had a polished smooth slightly thinner convex edge. I stopped at 2000 or 2500 grit I can't remember which and took the knife to the leather strop.
The INFI LOVES leather. I mean the edge came ALIVE on some leather and Chromium Oxide abrasive. STUPID Sharp and Mirror polish.
Back to the Vacant lot and my "test" logs and junk. MUCH better. Bit much deeper into the wood with less binding and sticking. This knife now is much closer to living up to its billing. The new convex edge held up really well and after 20 or 30 Min's of goofing off smacking trees and branches and various old crappy stuff all it took was about 5 Min's on the 2000 grit Sand paper and a quick strop to return it to push cutting news paper sharp.
Interesting knife and INFI really is a great choice. I am sold on MAG handles and any future Busse knives I buy will need to have them. One thing I am not sold on is the coating. Sure gets ugly fast. I am also sure that rough coating does not make the knife slice any better, as it does add friction. I may just satin finish this blade.
Great knife!
