Vaughan carpenters hatchet: hammer poll cut off,cut and hand sanded a big beefy framing hammer handle down to what you see there, made a nice little hickory wedge out of what i cut off. Its gonna make a nice little addition to the pack when i go out next:D i can take some more pics if anyone wants to see

excellent,
i do this also, cut off the hammer head.
trim back the cheeks sometimes to lesson the weight and this also allows for a choke up hand position near the cheek for fine carving

the handle work you did is killer. the straight lathe-hatchet handles are too big for my hands, so i i don't use them very often. i make my own, but after seeing how you worked the handle down i think i'll try it too.

by all means post some more images.

all good

yes thats exactly i cut it off, i wanted a small pack sized straight blade hatchet to take into the wilderness. in all it probably took me 6 hours to complete,i use no power tools(just doesnt seem right) aside from some minor finish sanding and some BLO,she is camp ready:D im still having some problems getting my photos off my phone...but i made this little vid, enjoy:D

Thats a nice lookin hatchet. I love hatchets. A great one can be of great value to the right person, no matter the marking, stamp, etc. Get out in the woods and have one, and they are a god send to have and a heartache to miss.

You might be surprised. I cut the hammer off my trail hawk and IMO the balance is much nicer. 4 ounces lighter too.:D

yes,the hammer poll on this one was particularly big it probably dropped a 1/2 lb. off the head.at 12" overall i thought it may be a little blade heavy, but its actually quite ballanced....and throws very well(as shown in vid):D
kinda unrelated,im building a forge so as to produce my own tools. something i feel is a very important skill to know this day in age.

how are you making the forge. will you use a brake drum for the fire pot?

a pipe with holes drilled along the length works well also.

heater fans from cars or trucks make good blowers. the blower can be hooked up to a battery charger or a battery.

looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Very nice work, looks good. I have seen something like this on an other forum . they also cut out the nail pulling notch in an arc going kinda the other way and made a nice lighter "bearded hatchet. olny an option not saying you have to.

keep posting these nice works.

thanks:D i actually live and do all my work in a 1986 toyota huntsman mini motorhome that i share with my girlfriend and dog.....id like to have an apartment:p

very nice samek!!!! i was thinking today about cutting an angled "notch" from the nail puller up and back to the handle....i think i may be developing a small problem.....ahahahahaha:p

For reference, I find the nail notch very handy for pulling old wire fence out of the way. Not sure how much is in the woods where you are but with all the old farm land in Maine it's pretty common to find. The nail puller notch grabs right onto that stuff and doesn't let go until you want it to, so you can clear wire nice and easily.
