Try as I may I couldn't find the thread where I mentioned my Marine son. The one where Spectre was talking about the ARK knife.

Anyhow thought I'd let some military not so secrets out of the sack.

He came home on leave for Christmas and when he returned, the first formation he and 5 or 6 other guys were pulled aside and offered Marine Security positions. This was one of the things my son chose initially going in but was told there were none needed. Apparently that has changed.

His commander was not happy since his group is already short on guys.

He was told he'd get an interview at a later date.
Well the date was yesterday but he was out in the field so didn't get interviewed but did get notified that they had looked over his "Jacket" and he was selected for the Security position.

This requires additional enlistment time, 7 or 8 months of additional training in Quantico and he has to spend a year in 3 different countries. So probably not as much home leave.

Shortly after returning after leave they had training on the Beretta M9's which he didn't think they would receive. He qualified expert which made him happy. They were also told that when they were deployed they would all be issued the M9 which I found surprising.

The lastest word is he will deploy to Irag first part of April as originally scheduled but will be brought back when the security training begins.

I'm still researching what all this security position entails. His mom is happy thinking he'll avoid combat but at the same time he gets hazardous duty pay full time in the security position.
They told him it was a great prerequisite for CIA/FBI and a few other initial type organizations.

So that's it for now. Still gonna hook him up with an ARK (Always Ready Knife) if I can and whatever else they'll let me hook him up with.

Godspeed to your boy and thanks for the service:)

You know, I think the M9 is a very underrated gun, but that's just me. Glad he shot it well:) It's my cannon of choice most of the time.

Nice! That's good news!

I know the bad guys are always listening but if it's OK to tell,
what is Marine Security?
Some internal thing like MP or more external? Since it could lead to 3 letter organisation I guess the latter? But then your wife thinks it might be less dangerous so maybe the former? Or probably something completely different :-D

Anyways, congratulations to your son. Also the ARK is pretty cool. It would be sufficient for any of my usual edc tasks as city folks member. I even cut a whole pineapple without any issues. Here is my review with pictures:

If they'd allow fixed blade concealed carry in California this super tiny blade would be it for me.

I don't have a definitive answer on what Marine Security is. I know its not like MP and I'm pretty sure its internal.

Neither the wife or I know enough yet to justify her thinking it's safer or more dangerous.
Not enough information yet.

Yesterday he talked like he'll be deployed and stay with his group for the duration, then will do the security thing when he returns. He sounded good with that, with all the training he's been through he said he'd like to get some use out of it.

Now I best get on the prowl for a couple ARK's I reckon.

Marine Security is probably referring to the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group. Your boy being selected for it says quite a lot about him and your family. You have to be good at your job and have a good, clean record in order to be selected.

Yep Scara is most likely correct. Marine Security Guards at Embassies. Sounds great.

I saw something a while back that explains why they suddenly have openings again. In response to the 2012 Benghazi attack, Congress recently ordered a near doubling of Marine Security Guards at Embassies world wide, However, there is an overall USMC draw down. So a higher percentage of Marines will be at Embassies with the MSG in the near future. In fact they are so understaffed right now they are doubling the classes ect necessary to get Marines trained to fulfill the required positions.

I gather that is basically what his whole group is going over for. Embassy protection.

So the security must be maybe higher up, inside closer to the important people or something.

He said they generally wear more of a dress uniform. I'll find out more as we go along.

Now the word is it's all on hold till he finishes the original deployment. Kind of like a hurry up and guess what happens next.

A very heart felt thank you to him for his service. The apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree... You are a great guy and it stands to reason it rubbed off on your family.

Thank him for his service. If son is like dad, there is nothing to worry about.

Bawanna, That's just great! My son is in the Army Reserve. Sounds like your son has made an impression on the people that count.

I know you're proud of him.

Email me: JRShirley (at) gmail.com.

There are donated ARKs waiting at Bento Box for deploying service members. We'll get one to him.

John

God bless you and your son. The only person in my family who served was my grandfather. He was in the merchant marines in WWII. We asked him, "why the merchant marines?" He said the day he turned 18 years old he walked into town and went into the first recruiting center he saw, and it happened to be merchant marines.

A huge relief to hear from ya Blue. I was starting to think the worst.

Yesterday my Marine was promoted to Lance Corporal. A little raise and a new patch which looks pretty cool.
My reserve marine at work told me the big step is Corporal. Larger raise and kind of a big deal since you cross over to NCO. I don't think I'll ever understand it all.

The little ARK arrived from Bento Box, I took just a little peak, want to leave it for him to open when he gets here in a couple weeks. Thanks Spectre for hooking us up. I sent a thank you email to Bento Box and received a nice response. Seem like good folks.
Probably gonna have to get my own ARK too, looks like a great little neck knife.
