I posted in the 20" Villager thread about a wood handle I had crack.
I most times scroll to the bottom after reading a thread and miss what might might have been edited.

I wanted to post my edit again in case anyone missed it.You can check out the other thread for the whole post.Something to keep in mind if/when anyone does a Major reshaping of a wood handle.Horn being a Natural material may have the same problem, but I don't know if they would be as severe due to the make up of the horn.It also has a "grain" so could possibly do the same thing.

This is what I posted in my edit.

There is _No Way_ that I consider the handle cracking the fault of H.I. or the kami that made my Khukuri.
By doing _The Major Reshaping_I_ _Created the Stresses_ that caused the handle to crack.
If I had of left it as it was I believe it would have lasted many generations in my family.
I just didn't want anyone to think the wooden handles were not good. They have served the Nepali's well for Hundreds of years and I imagine they suffer much worse climatic changes and we know they have Much Harder use in Nepal.

Khukuri FAQ

Yvsa, this is excellent information, especially for those like me who tend to become lazy when it comes to handle maintenance. Wood handles need maintenance and I like boiled linseed oil. As lazy as I am from time to time I rub some oil into the wood handles of the khukuris under the bed. It is a must.

I think if that handle had been saturated with linseed oil it probably would not have cracked.

Uncle I Know It wouldn't have Cracked had I put the oil on it.I was wanting to get it finished before I put the oil on,because of the sandpaper clogging so muc when the wood is oilesd first.
Trying to save me some minor grief caused a more serious problem.
I am just really glad it didn't crack from end to end!

I don't think it would have cracked in the summer either. The houses being so well sealed up these days makes the air very dry in them while the air outside is very damp. You probably don't have that problem in Reno.ainnit?

Khukuri FAQ

Yvsa, your post made me laugh. So many times in the shop we will try to take a shortcut and what happens 99% of the time is the shortcut ends up costing us more time and misery. I had a welder buddy I worked with some and we both laughed about this. We both would look for the shortcuts -- the easy way -- and we both knew it was a mistake but we just couldn't help ourselves. I think all shop folks are the same. We know better but we still shoot for that something for nothing -- and almost never get it. But when it works it is like hitting the lottery.

Like the ol' saying goes, though, "Ain't it odd how we can't find the time to do it right the first time, but we can always find the time to do it a second time?"

Hmm... So what should I do to preserve a horn handle?
