My BK5 came in on Monday.. My first thoughts on this knife when I was punching the "buy button" were that I would like this knife sight unseen because I liked the blade shape and how it is swept. When I opened the box I was not disappointed but not Wowed either. It felt good in the hand, the balance is nice and the knife as a whole is light. The blade came "hair splitting" sharp.. It actually filleted a very thin piece of my forearm when I was hair testing it. Gotta luv stupid
. The black coating on the knife seemed to me to be taking away from the beautiful lines of this mini sword. So........ I stripped this baby. IMHO I think it came out looking FANTASTIC. Was also thinking about doing a forced patina but after stripping and polishing the blade with a bit of polish I decided not to. Now I am lovin' the BK5 even more than I thought I would initially. Also changed out the stock side plates for the Micarta. Now the 5 feels complete, powerful, solid but graceful and delicate in hand. Weird?.... I know, but I like adding small touches to my gear to make it a part of me. Was there anything wrong with the 5 before I did these little things , nope, nada. I just have to tinker with my gear. A word of caution though. If you are not used to a knife with such a long blade, be careful. Besides the forearm stupidity, I also pricked myself twice with the tip.. Stupid X's 2
Also at the same time I ordered a Kydex sheath from JD at The 710 Custom Sheaths. The sheath came in yesterday. The sheath is a perfect fit to the 5. The finish and craftsmanship is I would say A1. The 5 locks into the sheath with a soft dampened thud. When I put the 5 into the sheath and turned it upside down and tried to shake it loose but it is held solidly in place. Very nice!! The sanding along the edges is uniform and clean with no scuff marks that I could see. Very nice work JD.
Being a noob I'm not qualified to offer a user review yet ( I'm still learning from everyone here ), but just wanted to share my thoughts and a couple pics with you guys. Enjoy the Eye Candy.
