My Name is Brian and I have Benchmade Problem

First I want to introduce myself. My name is Brian and I have had a knife bug most of my life. It wasn't until a few years ago that I began actually spending some money to get good knives. I am happy to have found this forum.

I have a Benchmade problem though. For the past couple of years, all I have bought are Benchmade knives. At first they were a bit to "tactical" for me, but then I got hooked on the quality and I haven't looked back.

Tonight, however, I bought a Lone Wolf Double Duty and am anxiously awaiting its delivery.

So, after all of this rambling, I was wondering if the group can make some recommendations of other makers I should be looking at as well. Nothing over $300 and I do have a preference for automatics and folders in general. My daily carry is Benchmade 960 though.

Thanks for your input!

Brian

Hello Brian. I have a Double Duty also. It is an amazing knive. The s30v holds up well and is fairly easily sharpened. No chipping problems yet. Considering you said you have a preference to auto's, that is the one auto i usually recommend due to the fact that it is double action and the auto feature is so well hidden. So you don't relly have to worry about carrying it. However, if it's legal to carry auto in your state, check out the UT6 line from Microtech for some awesome OTF autos.
As far as a good knife maker goes, I can't say enough about Kershaw. All of their knives are well priced and of the highest quality.

BTW, good choice on the 960 Benchmade.

Welcome to Bladeforums! Way to start out with the Platinum!

You could check out some spydercos. . . I have a BG42/Carbon Fiber Military I really like.

I will look at them thanks!

As far as the membership goes, I feel that if I am using a service like this, I should give something back. Good advice is hard to find!

I like what I see from Microtech, but I am not an OTF guy.

Thanks!

I'd recommend you check out the Kershaw and Zero Tolerance line as well. I started out a big Benchmade fan, I still am. But the past year or two has been mostly Kershaw. Well I bought some Spydercos and Bokers, oh and a few Benchmades in that time, but you may like Kershaw/ZT.

The next place you should look to is Spyderco and Kershaw. Both have company forums here and are quite involved in the community, and they make some of the best production knives out there.

Spyderco is a company you WILL get hooked on. They may look ugly at first, but once you handle a few...oh boy...:D

Not folders or autos but by all means check out the Himalayan Imports forum...Broaden your horizons...

Brian,

How do you like the BM 960? Mind giving a mini-review on it...? I've been considering it for my EDC for awhile now. And then there's the Sebenza that's been haunting my dreams.

I also frequently EDC a 960. As per a review, I've got an old one, with lots of photos. If they're still up...

A recommendation for another knife would be the paramilitary from spyderco and the blue / green bump from kershaw, if you can still get those.

Hi...

Welcome to the forums. Good choice to start with BM, I did the same thing. Then went to Spyderco. Those are still my two biggest suppliers, but Al Mar does some nice things, too. I have a mini-SERE and a Nomad, both are top-notch for F&F. Kershaw is coming out with some nice things lately, although I don't have anything of theirs.

You might also want to look at makers like Bob Dozier, Rick Hinderer, Chris Reeve, or Mick Strider. Those are going to be in the handmade category, so they'll be a bit pricier.

Thanks for all of the responses and suggestions.

As far as the 960 goes...

It is one of my favorite carry knives (I haven't been here long enough to understand what EDC means). Because it has no scales, it is much more thin and rides easy in my front pocket. I have BIG hands and fingers, and I am able to open/close this knife very easily. The blade retains a good edge after a lot of use. Balance is nearly dead on with a slight favoritism toward the blade. Added bonus is that this knife looks great!

EDC=Every Day Carry.

Welcome to the forums, there's much to learn here.

I also think a look into what Spyderco has to offer would be time well spent.

Check out the ProTech Godfather and Godson if you like autos. I think they look really nice. I've handled them at shows, and they are great. I just have no use for an auto, or I would own one.
