I'll have to dig out my copy of the book, but as I recall, thats pretty dang close to the original sketches. Looks real good. Nice work.

I had just made a quick sketch of it from a drawing that was sent to me. I think the original had a crown handle and no guard but since the edge of the blade comes down a tad bit below the handle plus I wanted to cap off the bone I thought a guard would be a must.

OH Yea! I think you nailed it Ray! Been wanting to do something like that for a while, just havent had the time.

If I remeber I too think the original had a crown handle, but that bone works real good too!

That really looks AWESOME Ray:D  :D

As for the Original I have only seen full tang with slab handled versions,Yours is much better looking and the guard is a must on any working knife in my book.
Again she looks GREAT..

Very nice job.

Here's a pic from Nessmuk's book Woodcraft and Camping:

standard

Yours would make a nice addition for any Nessmuk fan.

Thanks for the comments on the Nessmuk knife....

Blues, the drawing you posted looks like the one I did my sketch from. Do you know if Nessmuk's book Woodcraft and Camping is still in print? Could you give me an idea as to what else is in it? Ray

You should be able to pick up a copy from amazon.com.

The book is a short volume about Nessmuk's opinions on equipment and technique and his experiences in the wilderness.

A nice book if you are interested in the way it used to be done.

There aren't any other useful pix as far as ideas for knifemaking etc.

Thanks Blues, I would have been interested more for the knife ideas. I've got a book that tells me alot on the old ways and even has a bunch of drawings but nothing on Nessmuk..........Ray

Thanks Ed.... Wayne got me interest in doing the Nessmuk....

Are you going to be at the OKCA Show this year?.......... Ray

Ray; I plan on being there, Glen McPhearson and I are going to drive this year. Look forward to seeing you there. I had forgot all about the Nessmuk. First time I heard about her, Bill Moran mentioned her and I spent a lot of time finding a picture as it was the dark ages, (before the computer stuff) I spent a lot of time finding the book. Now many can share information instantly, sure is nice.

Ed, I'll be set up at V-7. I'm always there by myself so its hard to get away from the table. I did come by yours last year but you either had a customer there or where in the middle of a bull session. Hope your trip down is uneventful, I would think the weather will become alittle more stable in April. I've got to admit with the putors and internet things are alot simpler to find.........Ray
