My new 551 arrived today and barely opened... is this a customs/border thing?

Had a bit of a scare with my first Benchmade today as it came super tight. I loosened the pivot a tiny bit and now it is perfect. Lucky for me as it was unusable out of the box.

I live in Canada and the fine folks at Canadian Border Service confiscate and “destroy” many knives that don’t pass an unassisted flick test. If a folding blade easily flicks open, Merry Christmas to them. As I bought this knife from an authorized Canadian dealer, I am curious if Benchmade or their US disty tightens the blades on knives going to Canada (or other countries with stupid knife laws) to avoid knives being lost at the border.

Just curious.

P.s. my first Benchmade won’t be my last. What a great performing knife.

Yes all benchmade shipments bound for Canada get a complimentary overtighten to get past any inspections.

These knives are perfectly legal in Canada.its just the ignorance of the Canadian customs officers who don't no the differance between an auto from a flipper.
Auto knives are banned of course.
I would say most of them know that and keep it themselves.
I've had plenty of knives shipped up to Canada and never had one confiscated yet.(touch wood) lol.
It's always a good idea to tighten down pivots when crossing the border..

That's an awesome move Benchmade! I knew that certain suppliers would tighten the pivot down to send it across the border, but this is the first time I've heard that a major company is doing it too. It's very cool to see that done for our Northern comrades.

I never knew that a normal action might get confiscated.

Lucky for me everything I shipped made it through.

Unfortunately the CBSA is overstepping their authority and seizing perfectly legal items.

I had one confiscated... which is why I no longer ship folders to Canada.
Same here. Luckily it was a $12 Sanrenmu from China.

I have a knife on its way from USA Made Blades and I asked them to tighten the pivot if it already isn’t. Fingers crossed, but I’m sure I will be fine.

WHAT.if theCanidian buyer is prepared to take the confiscation and you are payed for you're knife what's it to you.now that you've sold you're knife for the asking price.and got paid.
It's the looser who suffers and takes the chance not you.
What a stupid statement to make and by the way I've never had a knife confiscated by customs..
Just saying like .and I have many sent up north .
Please tell us you're horrible experience why you won't send up north.as long as you where paid .
What's you're problem.please explain and don't say you feel bad for the buyer as that is the buyers problem and not yours.and that's the risk most Canadian buyers are prepared to take.simple really.dont you think.
Looking forward to this reply.

Yup. I can read.... thanks. I live in Canada and had a knife confiscated at the border as I stated. Can’t make it any easier for you to understand....

I guess I should feel terrible that “I didn’t mention that the “why I no longer ship folders to Canada” portion of your post was irrelevant to my response?
