My new 7 is getting rougher with break in.

Hi guys.

I got my new 7 a while back and have been breaking it in. I noticed a strange occurrence with this one.

It's getting WORSE instead of smoothing out like my other ones always did.

I took it apart when I got it to lock tite the pivot and see how the stand off construction differed from the spacers I was used to. I left the washers alone. They had a bit of some ordinary oil on them. And my pivot was already full of lock tite!

So that was a cool new thing!

Anyway, the longer I've played with this, the rougher it gets, to the point of thumb pain when opening it. It feels like it got sand in there but it didn't.

Anyway I'm rambling. Note to self. Drink coffee before posting next time.

Just thought I'd share a curious observation. Gonna caffeinate, then take it apart and see what's up.

Have a good one peeps.

Take it completely apart clean and inspect it. I had a full sized 7 that had small bit of G-10 left over from machining that got assembled into the pivot area.

If you can't find anything, lube it with your favorite lube and reassemble it. If it is still rough send it to EKI

First thing I'd do is loosen the pivot way up, then run hot tap water over the pivot, blow out with a compressor or canned air, then re-tighten the pivot. If that doesn't work, then go back inside for a look-see. If it gets that far, pay particular attention to the detents.

My guess would be that the closed detent ball has worn in a rough track on the blade. I would take a close look at that and if it is rough, light sanding and some lube will smoothen it out. I had a couple like that.

It started smooth, then got rough. Already had it apart the day I got it, before the roughness.

But all is fine now. Didn't even bother to take it apart. Just flushed it with wd-40. Good to go.

Thx!

Probably had some metal in there from break in .

Thinking so. Or Rayster's detent idea. Went away with lube so dunno.

Either way, I hope I didn't do any damage. Spent a lot of time trying to smooth it out before I WD-40'd it.

BTW. I haven't had any gumming issues, Officer's Match. Read it here tons, so figured it was good to go. You're the first to mention that.

Back to that whole variables thing from the other thread lol.

I used Crk lube on Emersons until they broke in. Or I have.in the past anyway.

A properly made and assembled knife from the factory does not need to have all these issues. Maybe Ernest needs to do the Quality inspections himself. My special editions that was inspected my Emerson himself has no issues.

Be careful opening and closing hundreds of times. A drink or two and you'll have a nice new scar. I know.

O well there goes my theory. My black bladed roadhouse just did the same thing. I took it apart and cleaned it. Used some 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper where the washers and detent balls ride, lubed and assembled. That Smoothed everything out. My guess was paint build up in the detent track.
