So my Benchmade 806d2 came today from New Graham, who I have nothing but good things to say about. I just noticed that it seems like the blade itself is bent to the right (looking from the spine side) and the grind lines are uneven. At times, maybe 1 outa 25 the lock really locks up and is very hard to unlock. I really expected more for $106 and an MSRP of $170. My 550 Griptilian has none of these problems. What gives with this? Along with that problem, the G10 and steel liners and plastic backspacer all do not line up perfectly throughout the whole knife. There are 3 noticable points where light passes through the gaps. Any suggestions? I really don't want to send it to Benchmade because I've been waiting since the beginning of this month for a new knife and set myself on this and also because I feel slightly attached to it.

Wow. I got two 806D2's from New Graham. One PE and one SE that I got for my Dad for Christmas. Both were fine. I'd send it back to New Graham and tell them to inspect the next one they send you to be sure it's okay.

the grind lines on my 806 were also very uneven... and the edges were really off too.

the delrin/zytel spacer was also fairly uneven and one side had a curved section and the other was a straight edge.

as for the lock... on a fast wrist snap, all my axis locks kind of bind up. how are you opening it?

i'd echo wadeF... have newgraham swap it. i can't imagine they wouldn't.

The uneven grind lines aside....I would give it some time to break in and smooth out. Some BM's are super stiff when new, while others are butter right out of the blue box.

Just my .02

... you mean black box:D I love the knife otherwise but even when the knife is closed the tip is offcenter in the handle and when I move the blade to put the tip in the middle the rest of the blade is not center (the spacing on both sides is different). I don't know what to do, I really don't want to send the knife back but I just get hung up on these problems with it. I made 2 small applications of Militec-1 and it has loosened up quite a bit and I'm sure it will just take some use like my 550.

That is one of those discussions i don´t understand.

Powel 85, if you feel unsatisfied with that knife (i would) send it back for replacement. And nothing more to say about this. Sorry, but how long you´ve waited is a thing i can follow by heart, but it really is the most unimportant point in the whole thing.

You can expect more, so ask for more. Anything else sounds like curious 2001

biogon,

I found WadeF's tip useful for fast and easy opening of the 806D2: Pull back the lock before snapping it open. That results in very little effort to inertia-snap the blade open.

Thanks, WadeF!

The blade of my 806D2 appeared perfectly straight on opening the box, but stoning revealed a slightly concave grind (in the horizontal blade bevel axis)on one side of the blade. Very minor finding, which I probably would never noticed if I hadn't re-profiled the blade.

A visibly-bent blade is quite another matter, and should be returned.

Uneven final-edge-grinds are almost to be expected in a mass-produced knife. It's common in knives by both Benchmade, Spyderco and other brands.

When in doubt, send it out.

Also, if you pull back the axis lock slightly and release as you're flicking it open, it should easily unlock a lot more often.

Just spoke to New Graham on the phone... I will be sending it back to have it exchanged. Thanks for the advice guys. I'm almost positive the blade is bent but the uneven grind lines make you second guess yourself because they make it seem like an optical illusion. Gonna have to ask that this one be given a once over before shipment. In under a 1 minute phone convo I was told to just send it back and they can either exchange it or refund my credit card, such great service, no questions asked.:) I can send it back and wait for another one because then I'll be truly happen with a great knife.

Good move on sending it back. NGK are active on these forums and I'm sure they would go the extra mile to make sure a fellow BF user is completely satisfied. If they knife is way off I'm sure they could get it replaced by Benchmade.

NGK is great...so is Angie from Benchmade...you should have no worries with either one of 'em...
They'll get everything sorted out...

one possible solution: swap it for a spyderco chinook II, if you can get over the freakish lines, that knife's a monster in my opinion. newgraham's got the combo & plain edge options.

Thanks on the suggestion alan, it looks like a great knife but I love the one handed use of the Axis lock. Besides the flaws of my 806, I love everything about it, definitely feels sturdy and solid.

I got my new 806 today, it's perfect. I'm so happy with it that it almost balances out the person hit and running me today after I left the doctor's. The only problem I have with it is that it seems like the blade wants to pull to one side while closed. Any suggestions? Thanks again New Graham.

I have that with some of my axis-locked knives, but not all of them. If you're a flicker, it shouldn't be a problem. If not, it might scrape against the liner it's closest to and scuff the finish.

Your quest might not have ended.

Thanks Thom, this is only my 2nd Axis so I still know very little about common problems/traits. Does anyone know of anybody who sells kydex sheaths for these with a Tek-lok for belt carry? If not how hard would it be to make my own? I have some clamps, drills, files and hand saws around the house for shaping and making holes.

There is an outfit called River City Sheaths that does all sorts of Kydex rigs for many knives. A search should give you the link. I don't have it off the top of my head.

Good luck with the 806. It's a classic.:)
