my new 960, issues?

I got a new BM960 today, but I had a couple things I noted about it, and wanted to know if they were typical of this model, or if I might be happier with another copy of it.

When I got it in the mail, I immediately noticed that the pivot was tightened down real tight, making it extremely difficult to open the knife even using the thumb studs, and even with the tight pivots I could hear the side of the blade rubbing on the side of the handle when I open it.

Now the tolerances on this knife seem to be pretty tight (the thinness of it quite surprised me, it's thin compared to my 705), but it still seems like this should not be the case.

In addition, when I tried loosening the pivot up, even when the screw wasn't providing any tightness the knife still would not open or close particularly easily, something which I appreciate and have come to expect from all the other axis locks I've had (705-401, ritter grip, and 806d2) (this also means that I can't close the knife with one hand easily). I tried putting some militec on it, but the issue still persisted.

There are also quite a few (5-10) marks in the finish with pure metal showing through on the inside of the handle up near the pivot, a couple of which go into the liner as well (although this didn't bother me too much, as I was planning to make this a light user).

Anybody have any questions/stories/suggestions to share?

I had no problems with the 960 and I have had 3. They were all smooth as silk out of the box. I would contact Benchmade, they should make it right.

You know what you should expect from a Benchmade and you know they'll make it right, send it back.

I'd seek an exchange with the mail order company you ordered the knife from first. You just opened it out of the package.

Save the Benchmade warranty for if the mail order company won't take it back, or for when you've owned the knife for a while and have a problem occur.

Thanks for your input, guys, it was helpful. I think I've gotten the situation taken care of to my satisfaction.
