My new Alpha B&C 279's

I finally got the opportunity to buy these, something I've been wanting since I first saw the pictures.

They have very nice checkered scales with the B&C logo on them but thankfully no ugly black print on the blade. The lanyard hole at the butt is hex on one side and could be useful under some circumstances. The sheath is made of nice suede like leather that's butter soft, has a distinctive snap and can be used vertically or horizontally. One odd thing is that the sheath is stamped 276 instead of 279, the guthook model with rosewood scales. :confused: The blade is 420HC but I think I'll switch one set to an older 277 that has an ATS-34 blade.

The action and one hand opening is the typical butter smooth action of all the folding Alpha's I own.

Great looking knife. I love alpha hunters but don't own one. Time to use one of my buck discounts on that very model!
 
I really like the checkering on those scales, very nice knife:thumbup:
I was amazed at the smooth action and fullness in hand of this model Buck when I got mine...very solid knife!
 
Beautiful walnut scales and sophisticated overall eye appeal particularly with the suede carrier. Thanks for posting the great photos.

Does it fit your hand well? I have these large economy sized paws and this Alpha is 8.5 inches overall open so I wonder how it looks in your fist.

John, I'd recommend the three knife 110 set if it wasn't for the ugly black printing on the blades. The wood inlays are beautiful and the B&C medallion is pretty classy, but in my opinion, they should have left off the blade printing.

Those 110's are nice Dave,

But, as you said I was put off by the black pad print on the blade and the high cost of this 110 set. Now for the price they should have put a very nice gold etch on them and these would already be on display;). The B&C Alpha's in the 2012 catalog are a deal price wise and the pressed checkering looks good to boot...maybe a mini-Alpha & a checkered Dorado to add to the pile:)

I would never have considered the 110 set either if it wasn't for being able to use my Pro Site discount to buy them.

Yeah, I'm with you on the other B&C Alpha models. I'm thinking that they are all in my sights now.

I Bet they could be sent to Joe, and they could polish off the ugly print in the shop...

For some reason the pro site only gives me the 40% discount price on stuff. So I have never bought anything from it. That set just may have sold to me if the Buck IT folks knew how to do their job, it still kills me that it works for some and not others. $288 + tax would have them at about $100 each and a nice case....Oh well I wont loose any sleep over it.

Tricky trying to buy the Alpha's, both large and small, in 154CM or in any particular steel. Some vendors advertise that the blades are Sandvik while also claiming that the same blades are made of 154CM. And, they could also be made of 420HC, ATS-34 or S30V... One popular vendor told me that a third party maintains their inventory so they cannot just pull one off the shelf and examine it. Gotta be tough for Buck, wholesalers and retailers to keep it all straight.

I'm beating the bushes for a small Alpha in 154CM with a horizontal/vertical sheath and so far a small herd of identical looking zebras has burst out.

I agree with this part. I'd also like to not have the medallions. To me, that would look pretty classy. I'm of the "elegance in simplicity" school. I generally like the understated, but fine quality.

But without one or the other, they wouldn't be a Boone and Crockett knife.
 
Nice looking knife plumberdv. I was actually looking at those online this morning as I was considering my next purchase. I do have a Vantage Pro due in tomorrow but that's another thread.

I like the B&C logo in the handle. It looks much better than having it printed on the blade. That's a really nice Alpha, Plumberdv.
