I have had some time on my hands recently so i thought i would play around with one of my Beckers.I have never liked the handle so upgraded to some Cocobolo with Silver/Nickel corby rivets.Added a choil, rounded the back and gave it a polish. Not quite a 100% but getting there.I am reasonably happy for my first attempt. The pictures are not the best but hope you enjoy them.:)

Nice job! Lots of fun isn't it? Now I lets see you mod your own Ranger! Keep up the good work. Like anything else, the more you do, the easier and better they get.

I was thinking about how mine would look with those exact customizations last night. Beautiful is all I can say.

PS. I want to add a Busse style seration on the blades clip. http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/8345/trickstermojo991f7b8wo2.jpg

I too was going to add some teeth and/or sharpen the swedge.I need something "less loved" to practice on first, then i may add them to this one.If not this one i have six other Beckers waiting in line, lots of fun come!

Thanks to all for the kind comments.Funny you should mention Rangers Scott,it was your work on the Rangers and soup_mongers beautiful Becker work that inspired me to give it a go.

Great looking knife. How did you remove the factory finish. I have a user BK10 I would like to do the same to.

Mike

The choil and the smoothing of the thumb ramp were done with a dremel. The back was shaped with a grinding wheel and then smoothed with dremel. The blade was immersed in paint stripper and then polished entirely with wet and dry and elbow grease. Its only down to 1500 grit at the moment.Handles were sculptured with dremel then hand sanded and coated with boiled linseed oil every 8 hours for five days, and finally polished.

Thanks for the info Mr. Steel. I got the finish off and am now at the sanding stage, but still at 320 grit. I have to decide if I want to try to get out all imperfections or just smooth it up some. Once I have it polished to my satisfaction, I am going to blue it. I think that will look good.

Thanks again.

I finally "scored" today. I was in Sportsman's Warehouse this afternoon with some buddies, and on our way out, we stopped to look at the Benchmades in one of the knife display cases.

I noticed a Becker BK7 sitting right beside them. Just under $50.

Naturally, I bought it!

I've already installed the extra pair of micarta grip panels that I had for just such an emergency.

I did notice, however, that the original handles felt significantly smaller than the same on my older BK7. Did Camillus make them smaller because of customer feedback?

First, that is some outstanding work, STEELWHORE. Nicely done.

Second, great score, rhino! That's about $100 less than some of the fleaBay prices I've seen.

Thankyou very much Guyon, the more i look at and hold it the more i am appreciating it myself, very satisfying after many, many hours of hand sanding.
The prices certainly are horrific on flea bay.As soon as i saw camillus close i snapped up 3 BK7 and a BK2 for $180,very glad i did.I already had the one i modified put aside to practice on.With prices how they are now i might have to part with a couple!

SteelWhore, as said before, a great looking knife.
How are you dealing with corrosion on the blade after taking off the coating, do you have any issues or did you apply some sort of inhibitor?
Cheers, you got me tempted to attack my BK 2.

That's what I was thinking when I saw it in the display case. The interesting additional fact was that the guy behind the counter knew that I was getting a good deal and they would not be getting any more of them in the forseeable future. And it was the same price they put on all of them back when the Beckers were still flowing from the factory to the store. So even back then, it was a reasonable deal.

I went ahead and started reprofiling the edge last night ... now even if I do get tempted to sell it on eBay, it's now a user and not a collectible. :D

As I continue to try to sharpen my new BK7, I'm noticing that it feels quite a bit different while sharpening than my BK7 from when they first hit the market. It's a lot easier to remove metal than the older knife, and I can't seem to get the level of sharpness, as when I try to get the edge thin enough, it just breaks down.

Could this be a heat treat issue?
