I just got this Grosse Messer in the mail today. It is my first
sword and so far I like it. :) Yes, I already chopped a phone book
with it. :D Even with it being fairly dull from the box and a wimpy 3 ft.
swing, it went half way through. Not to bad. The blade has a nice polish
and the workmanship seems decent. Something about the shape of
this sword made me want it, as it almost looks like a giant Bowie knife.
What's the best way to sharpen this beast?

Appreciate it. Just got finished playing around with it and it
handles ok for such a big blade. Definitely a two hander.

At one time I owned one of those, and I liked the way it handled oddly mine seemed a bit livelier then some of those I've handled at the CS booth at the Blade Show. Just a word of caution... eventually I sold the one I owned to someone else as I moved to more historically accurate items. He snapped the blade at the hilt juncture cutting a pumpkin of all things. It seems that it had an inclusion in the blade at that point where it met the cross. That was several years ago and hopefully Cold Steel has fixed the quality control since then, but I would recommend that when cutting you keep any spectators out of the line of your swings and back at a substantial distance just in case.

Oh sorry, as for the sharpening, I've always had the best luck with two or three different files, course to fine and a lot of patience.

Man, I have thought about buying one of those for the longest, now I got the jealousy bug bad:mad:

They look so menacing, who wouldn't want one?

Congrats on the purchase and post some more on how it performs, you may force me to pull the trigger on one:thumbup:

Triton, I read about that pumpkin incident. I heard that they improved
the quality control on them since then on the newer ones, so I went for it figuring I would get a newer model since I ordered from a high volume CS dealer(Belote) on Ebay. I did get one of the newer ones(it has a handle completely enclosed by the wood unlike the old ones where you could see the tang on the handle). Thanks for the safety advice, I'm new to swords
but heard about incidents with kukris so a flying chunk of steel is to be avoided. I smacked the phone book pretty hard but I'm not going to chop
down a tree with it anytime soon.

chuckinohio, just to let you know, thge dealer mentioned above is
asking $161 + $20 shipping, that is the cheapest I have seen anywhere.
The looks of it are very menacing, Ive always liked bowies and cruciform
shapes on edged weapons, it was a no brainer for me, especially since
I heard they improved them.

Thanks for the pricing tip, thats a good price compared to what they usually go for.

Cool, if they've improved the QC on that one I'd have to say that it's probably one of my favorites in that price range. It's not completely accurate historically but it's at least based upon a proven design and it really is a nasty chopper.

Cecil Clark cutlery in Newport Kentucky, they do business on the internet as Bladematrix.

I got me one for 180.00 and it is a BEAST! I love it.

Thanks for the post spurring me to finally get one:thumbup:

Ok I do have a question what is the ring on the right side of blade as looking down on it in the picture? Does it serve any purpose other than being a guard.

Good question, I wondered that myself. I'm assuming it's just
a guard but I'm not sure.
