Went for a hike with my youngest and he has this thing about picking up sticks every time we're out and leaves them outside the house when we get back. Today I said let's make walking sticks and he said but I want to keep them and I explained how leaving them alone is why he hasn't been able to keep them and we had to prep them if he wanted to keep them. I finally convinced him
First things first
This thing is surprisingly light in hand and got a whoa from several family members during the unboxing LOL I was a little underwhelmed unboxing the BK4 and was in that mind frame and I guess its the blade shape because even I was like well damn
Everyone else has beat the crap out of this thing so I figured that's been done to death I'd do something different
I wasn't sure what to expect from the 9 in shaving the walking stick or doing some of the finer work on the stick and while I couldn't draw shave with it like I can with the 4, the balance didn't lend to fatigue and lent itself extremely well to just shaving off the bark and cambium with very little effort.
Here's the stick I was working on, two well place shots took the two offshoots off cleanly (man does this thing cleave)
About 20 mins in I had all the bark off
My son working on his with his Mora 511, it was hard not wanting to use that 511 on mine (it makes it so easy)
Just over an hour in to get all the cambium off, once its all white you're good to go. I'm going to let it sit a week then chop the ends a bit and seal them in wax
I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know but this thing is amazing and its size lends to much ease in its use for smaller tasks and I believe with some time and patience you can do finer tasks with this thing. I honestly don't think it would have been this easy with the 2 for me today. I'll have to do another I guess to see, might as well do a few since I have to wait a year for these two to harden.
