My New Blade: a Blur

So, my first Kershaw arrived today and I have to admit that I'm impressed. It's a Blur (recommended by a friend) I didn't shell out for any uber-steel this time because it's an EDC knife and I am new to the brand, so I settled on a pretty inexpensive 420 stainless version to test out the operating system and ergonomics. I am Pleased. Everything has a nice finish, looks good and feels good in the hand. No blade wobble. And every time I open it, the a/o puts a smile on my face.

So, all in all pretty pleased. Time to put it through its paces and then look into a more pimp version.

gotta love the A/O on the blur. it just snaps open fast and locks up hard. probably the best A/O action among all the kershaws I have.

It's really good to know that I made a solid choice, and I have to admit that A/O is super-handy; i think "I need my knife" and it's there ready to do its job. I'll have to report back after I give it a spin.

Glad you like it! I think the Blur is one of my favorite knives I have ever owned. Going to have to pick up a new one at some point.

Like you, I haven't had a ton of experience with KAI knives. However, I've now had 5 over the last year and all have had consistently great quality. I've sold off a couple of them (an OD-1 and a Skyline), but still have a beater (Vapor), my son's (OSO Sweet) and my new ZT 0551. Pleasant experiences all.

The blur is awesome, I got 6 different ones, they are one of the best Kershaw models made.

I love the blur! The S30V model is one of my all time favorite knives. Only gripe I have is its kinda hard to draw from the pocket sometimes due to the small space between the clip and handle and the trac-tec inserts.

Does it have a lanyard hole? That may assist you in withdrawing your knife.

About the Blur. I have only owned 1 example. It was extremely slow opening. Much slower than a Benchmade Axis or Nitrous assist and certainly 2 or 3 x's slower than my Kershaw Random Leek. I tried the pivot pin but it made no difference and only ended with a wobbly blade. Any suggestions.

It does have a lanyard hole. I did that and it makes it easier to grasp, but it just doesn't slide out very easily. Its still doable...just a minor gripe. Still love the knife. As for the slow opening on yours, when my speedsafe knives get a little sluggish, I take them apart and use some gun oil on the washers and that usually helps speed it up. I actually removed the torsion bar on my blur and use it like that. with the gun oil, its super smooth and opens very quickly without sacrificing lock-up.

I can see that, it's a little tight, but, if you don't need to poke it all the way down to the bend before the screws, it is manageable. Since this is an upgrade for me, I'm really just stoked that it's stout enough to be tight. I suppose that, if you have access to a vise, you could increase the angles of the bends in your clip to make a little more room (for the love of all that's holy, remove the clip first). But that would probably come at the expense of the security, since less of the clip would contact your pocket. Just a thought on tweaking.

I don't believe there is a 420 version correct me if im wrong someone?

It is 420HC and a helluva buy if you can find it right. I bought mine a few months ago at the South American Rain Forest site (*hint*!) and it was a steal for $31 delivered to the door. I love this knife - it carries great, holds and edge well, and is easy to sharpen to a screaming edge.

I am actually thinking of another one as a backup....

The Blur looks great. I already have a Skyline as my EDC, but you can never have too many knives. I'll have to go pick one up ASAP.

Replace the torsion bar.

The Blur is a very cool model IMO,also the 420 is nothing to worry about with the proper heat treat it can be an excellent working steel, kershaw and buck make some of the best 420 out there.

Just as an update, I am still EDC'ing and loving this knife. Had to sharpen it recently because I gave it a little "tough love" it sharpens nice and holds the edge well even with the 420 and it's mostly cardboard diet (impressive). If anyone is on the fence with this one, it gets my strong recommendation.

if you think the 420HC blur rocks wait tell you try a cpm-154

mine is just amazing, cut some kevlar rope with it today and it didnt even dull it hardly, stropped it and it was back to hair popping like nothing its just the best steel i've ever had and an amazing knife
