What's up guys? I recently ordered a Ganga Ram 18 inch from Mrs. Yangdu. After only a couple of days it came in the mail. I love this thing! Very nice craftmanship.
The handle is almost big enough to accomadate two hands. All and all, I am very satisfied with the the knife. I Specifically ordered one without a sheath of the miniature knives.
I plan to make my own sheath from kydex, and don't have much need for the miniatures. On that note, there is a protrusion on the blade tip side of the cho that makes me wonder
if it will not be an impeidment to drawing this knife from a kydex sheath. Here is a pic of what I am referring to.

It seems that it would be an easy enough task to simply grind away the protrusion to make a smooth line all the way to the handle. This will be my first kydex work, so I would like to avoid any unforseen snags along the way if I can. Would there be any reason not to do this? If you guys have any input it would be greatly appreciated. Here is another pic of my new blade.

Thanks guys.

Put a spacer against the blade when you form the Kydex then no grinding is required.

Congrats on the new blade and welcome to the community.

That protrusion is pretty common, though a bit exaggerated on your blade. Some khukuris
come with a smooth line to the handle, others are more like yours. I think the slimmer models,
such as the Sirupate, tend to have the smooth line, while the fatter blades carry the curve of
the belly around like yours. Tirtha Kami seems to prefer the smooth profile on all his knives.

It's pretty easy to hand-file the tip of the "protrusion" as far as you like. Sometimes filing
off just the pointy part at a 45 degree angle produces a nice effect without changing the
larger curve much.

I suggest that you lay out the kydex shape first (on cardboard or paper), then decide
whether or how much to file down the protrusion, before finalizing the kydex. You might
find that the fat belly of the Ganga Ram is the main impediment to drawing the knife and
that when you make the kydex sheath accommodate that curved belly, the protusion
might not even be an issue.

I don't think you'd want your sheath that tight in that area anyhow. There should be plenty of room for that in the upper area of the sheath since that's the narrowest part of the blade.

I don't think I'd be filing on it.

Never made a kydex sheath before but did you consider a top-loading sheath? The fat belly from the ram might make your sheath look very chunky if you decide to do a traditional sheath. If you can slide it in from the top you might be able to make the sheath more narrow. if you're worried about the retention of the blade I'm sure you can add some kind of additional retention.
Anyways, please update/show us when you do decide to make your sheath :)

Thanks for all the replies. I ordered the sheath making supplies a couple of days ago so hopefully I will begin the project this weekend. I will post some pics when it is complete.

Hey guys, been working on the sheath for this beast. As I said this is my first work with kydex so I'm sure I will get better. I plan to make a holster for my pistol with tac light next. The sheath isn't 100 percent complete. I still have to smooth out the edges a bit more, trim the part covering the handle, and make a belt loop. Overall I think it's turning out fairly well. The only thing is that it's a very tight fit. I wrapped the blade in masking tape but it doesn't seem like I used enough. Even with the strap unlatched I can hold the sheath upside down and the knife will stay put. I'm thinking about removing the last rivet up on the spine of the blade, but not really in a hurry for that. Anyway, I said I'd post pics of my progress, so here are a couple. If anyone has any tips or suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Looks like you might have enough material up in the handle area to warm up and fold over into a built in belt loop. I'd probably fold over at the front of the handle and let the loop be right over the strap.

On my smaller everyday carry knife I made a sheath and just ran that stretchy para cord stuff thru the grommets and used the para cord for belt loop. It flexes a little bit so if you bump something it kind of moves clear a bit. Don't look like you have enough material on the front to try that approach.

Your looking good, I like the color. You might just hit the whole sheath with a heat gun with the knife in place and it should reform a tad so it isn't quite so snug. I'm sure no expert on kydex but I have made a couple sheaths that took some tweeking to get them right but they worked out.
