Hi all. I just recieved my first purchase from ebay and its a Original Bowie knife made in Spain. Its 15" overall with a 10" long blade,2" wide and 1/4" thick. Its got a brass S guard and is full tang with a nice red colored wood handle. It kinda looks like a cheaper made Muela.
My fear is the steel! The blade is stamped Original Bowie with a coat of arms and 440 - STAINLESS STEEL. Does this mean 440A steel and if it does what can I expect out of it?The knife had never been sharpened so I put a double bevel of 20 relief and 25 edge (this is pretty hard steel) and then used the mousepad up to 2000 grit and then stropped.I then took it outside and whacked up a bunch of dead and living pine branches up to probably 1/2" and it worked just great and under the magnifier the blade edge looks OK and its still shaving sharp.I paid $38.05(with shipping) for this knife and its probably been sitting around for years as to the staining on the blade from sitting in its sheath.
Good buy or bad buy?Good steel or bad steel? thanks,Doug...........
