My New Box Cutter

I recently picked up a cheap (about a buck) box cutter and have been carrying it in my shoulder bag. It has turned out to be a really useful EDC blade. OK, I can hear the groans out there now, but this thing works great for cutting string, paper, cardboard - of course! - and even did a good job of peeling an apple – that is, most of the usual things I had been using a larger, lots more expensive knife for. The blade is scored and designed to break off in 3/4” or so lengths, so there is a new one as each becomes dull. And with a bright orange plastic handle, it presents a “friendly” look when deployed in public. OK, “deployed” is overdoing it a bit, but you get the idea. It is also slim enough to carry in my shirt pocket and even has a clip. Not a great clip, but then remember the whole deal is only a buck.

So, anybody else carry one of these?

Also, at some point I may want to “up grade” to something a bit better made. Maybe all metal? Better blades? Better pocket clip? Is there such a thing as a “higher end” box cutter that is similar to the one I now have?

I have an OLFA all metal locking cutter with their black blades and it is the sharpest thing I have found. I use it for detail cutting at work, but in my mind the OLFA line are the best "box cutter" style blades out there.

Yep, Olfa makes excellent disposable blades.
I have one of their little box cutters, and my wife uses their rotary cutters for fabric

I've heard that it's not uncommon for disposable blades to use 12C27. Meaning you could probably sharpen those blades just as well as any other knife, you really couldn't ask for a better beater knife. A super thin wharncliffe blade that can be easily replaced with damage. It almost makes my Spyderco Military look like inferior equipment.

For lighter duties, I've used the Gerber Exchange a Blade. It's okay, has more exposed blade than most retractable razor knives. Just don't expect much handle to hold on to, it actually hurts during hard use. It does carry ikay with it's pocket clip, and thin shape.

For years when I used to work in the lab I kept a stockman in my pants pocket, but a box cutter in my lab coat pocket. I used the box cutter a lot.

A box cutter has no soul, but it works good.

haha That is one of the best descriptions I have ever heard. That should be in the dictionary under box cutter
