I've just received my new Calyspo Lite weight plain edge. Super sharp and I really like the new handle design.I like the clip better than the through the handle design on the Delica 98 and other styles. This isn't as easy to change over to a left handed style, but it looks nicer and I like my knives to ride lower in my pocket.Just to be different I asked James(CHAI CUTLERY)to electro engrave a Chai sign on the blade. It came out really nice. He put it just to the left of the opening hole and about 11mm in size.I was telling a friend of mine about it and he had me order one for him also.Maybe we started some thing? I can't wait to see one In the Maroon color, like the prototype pictured on the BF earlier.

Thanks!

Oooh, James, that looks very cool! If you have enough stock to cover it, might I suggest you bring a couple like that to Blade Show West? It's certainly the kinda thing that'd catch my eye, maybe it'd do the same for others. Especially sitting next to a placard that explains the meaning of the symbol.

(Sigh, still scouring the house trying to find my micarta Calypso Jr. -- though it's really an "Experimental #03, Dragnet")

I wish I could get a good Picture from my scanner, but I can't, so I'll explain. I cleaned the blade with alcohol and filled the Chai with Black from a Sanford permanent marker, also the Spyderco lettering around the back of the blade. Then brushed off the excess with one of my business cards leaving the marker ink in the Chai and the lettering. Then I reoiled the blade and wiped it off. This removed a small portion of the ink leaving a nice contrast and it seems to be durable. It rooks fantabulous.

James, I'll 2nd Carl's suggestion...I'm planning on Blade Show West myself and would love to pick up a Chai Custom Calypso (even tho you're relatively down the street from my office

).

OTOH, I'll settle for even the homely version.

I got my Calypso jr ltwt in todays mail. What a joy!

Thank you James!

Calypso jr ltwt is just like I thought it would be but a LOT lighter. I'm comparing Calypso with G-10 Harpy and Calypso is so light that I can't belive the blade is made of steel! It truly deserves to be called lightweight knife.

It was almost as sharp as Moran which has been so far my sharpest knife out of box.

I hope that Spyderco will make a puukko style fixed knife that is so sharp that it beats even Moran. Not much hope

James, how much do you get for an engraved Calypso lightweight? That is one sweet looking knife! Marcus

I shouldn't post crass commercial details here, but the operation is simple and doesn't take much time, so the extra cost is comparable to buying a sandwich at a workng class restaurant.

James please give the meaning of the chai sign again. I think I knew this once not sure. Choose life. Maybe?

"Chai" (Hebrew letters 'chet-yod') is not a symbol but a word - "Life." It is pronounced with the ch as in "Bach" or "Loch," to rhyme with "high." If you pronounce it with the ch as in "China," you are asking for tea in a bunch of languages other than English.

The toast, "Lechayim," as in the song in Fiddler on the Roof, means "To life."

The word is used in jewelry to carry sentiments like "Live long and prosper." It is not a specifically sectarian symbol, like a cross or, in modern times, a "star of David," so wearing or displaying it is not necessarily an indication that one is Jewish.

Another bit of lore - The numeric values of chet and yod in the Hebrew Alephbet add up 18, so 18 becomes an auspicious number in Jewish folklore, and cash gifts on Jewish occasions or to Jewish organizations are frequently in multiples of 18.

Thanks for the explanation. I did not realize they were letters though I probably should have. mm the one that looks like an apostrophe is a letter.
