Yeah thanks guys! I see a ton of these hatchet heads not sell on a certain undisclosed bidding site and I get why - it's a very specialized head without too functional a poll and an odd eye hole (hammer ones I believe?). But the low price point they go for was just too hard to resist, especially when I saw its potential with a bit of modification. Peg is dead-on about the useless nail puller.. it's hardly functional and taking it off effectively turns it into more of a carpenter's pattern where you can choke up right behind the blade for very controlled and precise cutting.
I was initially going to carve my own handle from scratch, but then I remembered a crummy no-name hatchet I had with a slightly lose head. Crummy steel that couldn't hold a good edge and wasn't going to see any further use... the handle was pretty solid with good grain though so I just cut off the head and shaped the handle to suit. Octagonized it too just for fun. Decided to carve my own wedge out of cherry - first ever non-supplied wedge I ever made or used so we'll see how well it does.
Lastly I decided to try a chisel type bevel since it'll mostly be used for carving. Practically flat on the dominant side and maybe 35-40 degrees on the other. It's shaving sharp and will bite into the wood when simply placed flat against it.. I'll try doing some light wood processing (chopping/splitting kindling) with it to see of the profile is good enough for a general use hatchet.
So far though, really liking it! Anyone wanting to give a go definitely shouldn't hesitate..
