First off, a big thanks to Eric, as always, he helped me out after getting the order form wrong. No address and wrong shipping.
Thanks again mate.
It arrived this morning, Wayne, our mail, contractor yelled out from the top of the paddock Ive got your new knife here Good job I wasnt trying to hide it from my wife.
Anyways after unpacking it and drooling over it for a half hour or so I decided to bundle up the knives that I feel are in its class, including a couple that really werent.
Off into the scrub we go, that is Bonnie and I. Stans toting a very sore paw at the moment and it would have been cruel to make him follow.
No chop tests conducted
just a feel of them in the bush and the knowledge of what would feel to be the best all rounder.
Heres a few pictures to start off with.
The possible contenders. Top to bottom. SFNO, Ratweiler, SH-e and the HOGFSH
Actually I added another to the lie up the NO-e
The NO-e being a bit too small was withdrawn as well as the HOGFSH being a little too massive. That narrowed it down to the SH-e, SFNO and the New Weiler. All three were in the same size group, not too big and not too small.
Next on to the skinning ability.
Just jokin
she plays dead when I tell her to.
Seriously though, to have an all rounder it needs to be able to skin comfortably and the handle needs to feel natural when holding the knife upside down to make the initial skinning cuts. The two most natural handles to me were the Chop Weiler and the SFNO. The SH-e feels quite awkward when holding it upside down. Just a feeling thing as it would skin and butcher quite well.
My final thoughts were that the new Weiler or the SFNO were about equal and either would suite me perfectly.
Heres a pic of it in one of Dwaynes pin lock sheaths, really made for the SH-e
Also for those that dont have the both series of Ratweiler to compare with Ive included a picture of them both together.
Cheers,
Ian.
