I have always lusted after a Emerson Commander. Finally last week I purchased one! The question that I have is that this knife has an annoying habit of opening in my pocket. Why is the pocket clip placed so that the tip of the blade is point up in my pocket. Several times this week I have nearly cut my finger when reaching for this knife. THen the totally annoying thing. Today when sitting on my couch my leg rubs against the armrest of the couch. In the process the tip of the knife catches on the fabric and actually opens the dam knife! (and put a small hole in my couch) Most other knives that I own have the pocket clip positioned so that the knife blade points down in your pocket and the thumb stud is viewable. THe commander is opposite with no options of switching the orientation of the clip. I am dissapointed. FOr being the "no 1. hard use knife" I cannot safely carry this knife it opens in my pocket and I am afraid that the knife point is going to gore me when I reach for the blade. What is the solution to this??

THanks

Ren

The Commander has to be carried tip-up in order for the Wave to work. Point down=no Wave opening.

Just try tightening up the pivot pin a little, which should take care of the problem. If you are willing, you could take the knife apart (they are made for this, and it will not void the warranty) and bend the ball detent toward the blade a bit to snug it up.

I have many commanders and carry one daily. I would carry it in my sleep if my jimmy jams had pockets!:D

I have never had these 'problems' (?) that you speak about and have never heard anyone else having these mishapps that you speak of.

They ARE the #1 hard use knives in the world. No mistake about it.

Maybe you need to treat her a little nicer and she may do the same in return, if she so wishes.....

dont get me wrong Gundy. I love the knife lines just gotta figgure this blade out. P.S. If I can figgure this little opening issue out well then Ill wear it to bed. Ill just clip it to the back of my Thong!

THONG!! LoL ;)

What Scott said...if you adjust the tention on the blade pivot screw, it will tighten the whole affair and you should not have any more problems.

If you do, send it to me and I will fix it for you! :D

Be safe! .....

The Commander, and all "Tip Up" knives should be carried all the way against the back of the pocket, so that the blade does not have room to come open.
With a "Waved" knife, this also makes Wave opening easier, at least in my experiance.

This will solve your problem hopefully. :)

just curious Ren, are you carrying the Commander in your left pocket? it seems to me that that would be the only way the Commander would "behave" as you described...

Ren:

When you disassemble your Commander, make sure your secondary ball detent is actually 'seating' itself into the blade retention hole. You will see a scribe line created by the bearing on your blade. If it is not seating properly, I suggest you send for some loving care at the factory.

What Satin said:

When I had my first Commander.., I had the exact same problem you described.., and simply positioned the clip so the frame sits against the rear of my pocket..., end of problem :)...enjoy...it's a great knife...

ok I have tried carrying the knife in the back of my pocket as suggested. ( I always carry knives in this position) the problem that I have is the tip of the knife catches on my jeans when I remove the knife from my pocket. This opens the knife. Dam dangerous. I have not tightened the pivot screw which I will do tomorrow. I am losing my faith in the ability to carry this knife every day but maybe I need more practice or....

Another thing I forgot to mention. If your intention is to remove the knife without deploying the blade, you really need to pivot the knifeup in your pocket; picture using the clip as a pivot point. This moves the Wave away from most things that it might catch on to deploy the blade. I have found that removing a Waved knife without doing this, especially from a pair of pants that you are not wearing, can be hazardous! I also do not carry Waved knives inside my pocket (not clipped) for the same reason. There are just to many ways the Wave can catch on something and open the blade a little.

I must say that My Commander opened in my pocket a couple times when it was new. The first thing I did when I got it was loosen the pivot pin so it would open easier. After a few days it had broken in enough that it opened VERY easily. A little too easy. So I tightened the pivot pin a little and the problem went bye-bye. No more in-the-pocket openings here. And I've had this baby since 1998.:D I hope it's this simple for you. You can't get a sweeter knife.

I gave the pivot screw a half twist. and the knife opens when I want. The wave opening is beautiful and it stays closed in Mr. Pocket. (mr penis is happy about this) I cant wait to start using it hard. Any one know where osama is Ill use this knife to carve him like a easter ham! After all its sharp enough!

Ren,
Glad you were able to "sort" out your knife....have a great time using the hell out of it...as to where Osama is, if you do find him, let us know too...I'm sure most of us would be willing to accompany you to carve him up...:p

If you find Osama, a Commander applied copiously to the sides of the throat would be a good start! My Commander did the same thing yours did when it was new and I carried it in the pocket of some baggy shorts. It opened up and cut a hole through the side of my pocket. Felt a burning sensation on my leg and it was the edge just about to cut me. Tightened up the pivot screw and no more problems. Good luck, you'll love this blade!

if you take it apart, put in a drop of locktite to keep the screw from working itself loose.

Glad to hear that your Commander is staying closed until called for. Just a question.

1) when you close the blade relly slowly, is there a perceptable "pull" right when it closes, such that the final 1/4 to 1/8" of movement closes itself?

2) when opening the blade really slowly by hand, is there a perceptable resitance for the first 1/8 to 1/4" of movement before it eases?

If you are getting a "no" to either of these questions, then it would be worth taking the blade out and checking to see that the secondary detent is actually getting into the matching hole in the blade. You want more than just pivot tension holding the blade closed...

hmmmmm...

All I can suggest is that you buy a pair of shop goggles, a small tarp, and for God's sake - don't do any hard use with a knife in your hand!

Osama does not get commander to the throat.
Thats for the Psark.

Commander is for the Femoral, Psark cuts the throat, and a waved 7 between the ribs. As Emerson knives are numbered, and the Military loves to number things, all the knives in their proper place.

Everyone ok with that?
(those who disagree will be flogged by vampire gerbal)

I hate Ossama, he hates me,
I've got a big gun sitting across my knee,
With a commander in his @$$ and a .357 in his knee,
Lets all get in line cause this dip-shi+ cutting test target aint gonna last long...

I'll bring the civilian. Someone bring the dead pig and the liquor.

tighten the pivot and no more probs - i personally have NEVER had my '00 commander open in my pocket, at all - if this doesnt help send it in, this aint usual behaviour for an emerson imho
