My new custom idea

hey all,

I am thinking about getting a knife custom made. This is a rough drawing but I wanted some fellow Busse Lover's opinions. It's the same basic design as the old Straight Handled Models but it has a spear point with a double edge at the end of the knife and a main grind similar to the ZT series. I want it in the 5/16ths INFI if Jerry has it available for the custom shop as an option. No frills, just basic black micarta handles, brass tubes. Probably a bead blast finish. What do you guys think. It's my idea of the "Combat Wombat". Though I'll probably rename it since I think that one was thought up by one of our fellow forumites.

Are we talking SH or BM? I'd say that that design lends itself more to the BM. I like everything but the handle, fastener combo. I personally would prefer bead blast or satin with camo handles and silver tube fasteners. What about a custom khukuri? Has that been done?

Actually, I know that a Busse Khukuri has not been done. But I do think that one would be very well recieved, and an automatic classic.

Matteo,

Jerry can make you whatever you want. But since a Khukuri would require more metal because of the shape... Jerry's $100.00 an inch rule would go up I'm sure. I don't think there will ever be enough demand for a Khukuri to make it a production model. Though I could be wrong. And I didn't know Jerry had Silver tubes or I would have asked for them.

What if it folded?:D

I really like the design, but I think the knife is going to end up really, really blade heavy. According to your sketch, you have 15" of cutting edge, with only the tip and 6" back being double ground. That leaves 9" of full thickness from the plunge cuts to the double edge. Why not have it flat ground all the way to the spine, like on the old straight handled Battle Mistresses? That would knock off a lot of weight, without sacrificing strength. You can still sharpen the top edge 6" back too.

Great design RYU! I would tend to agree with danbo about the flat grind. Jerry is simply amazing with custom work. When I had sent him the pattern for the behemoth, I was concerned with it being too blade heavy so, I left the grind design up to the master and was really surprised at how such a monster could feel so balanced.

A 15", sabre ground, 5/16's blade is going to be FAT. It will split wood like a maul, but may bind a bit while chopping, then again, the sheer weight of the mother would probably overcome this in everything but the softest of woods and, vines/brush. A flat grind would overcome some of this, but the sabre grind would look so cool.

I like the finger guard in the handle, this is a departure from Jerry's style, I'm curious to see his take on it. I think bead blast would be the way to go if you intend to beat it.

Cool knife, sword, implement of destruction.  :)

Ryu, I like it. Machete-like qualities, and a lot of cutting-edge available.

I think I'd opt for some camo-based micarta, something to add some low impact flair.

Jerry should still be able to get the "silver" tubes for you.

I know that all the extra metal will make it heavy but I'm a pretty big guy. I carry a Badger like other people carry Mean Streets. I don't think it will be a problem. Besides Jerry is out of the 5/16ths INFI. All he has is oversized 1/4" (.265"). So that will lighten it up. I just want a massive "now that's a knife!" knife. It has the potential of a gladious. The utility of a machete. The heaft of a Falcata. And the weight and beefiness of an axe. A strong man's knife no doubt. But imagine if one could tame and master it. Jerry said he felt I'd be able to mske it swing like nobodies business. Dragon's Fang although well balance was a little too light for me. I need some weight. Though I may asak about balancing for throwing ability. Imagine that thing sinking into your chest at about 30 MPH. THUD!

I might have it sent off to Wilson Combat before the handles go on and have it Armor Tuffed Olive Drab Green. How sweet would that be?

I like it :D

I do have a few suggestions, though.

First off, I agree with some of the previous posters in that I'd love to see the grind as full flat, or atleast a very high saber. The knife will still be plenty hefty, IMHO ;) :D

Also, this thing BEGS for a recurve :D

Great idea Ryu!
Are you thinking of a similar blade height as the SHBM, or a little narrower like the ergos?

well I got the final word and it's possible. I have to make some final drawings to send to Jerry. The addition of a blade catch may be needed. It will be a work in progress for about a month before it is definately going to go into production. And that's if Jerry is ready to start on it. Strabs... It will basically be a SHBM variant of which the likes we have never seen. I have, however, decided on it's official name.

The "Event Horizon" Which is (if I'm not mistaken) the birth place or focal point (one or the other) of a black hole. A force not to be taken lightly. Get it... Lightly? No light in a black hole... you guys need to hit the books.
