I received my new Sifu Special Edition yesterday. I must say pictures of the Sifu do not do it justice. When I withdrew the knife from its circular tube, I could barely believe my eyes. This knife is BIG. It seems well balanced and is much smoother to open than either my Pocket Hobbit or Carnivour were when new. The Special Edition, as I'm sure you know is a design enspired by forum types. It lacks all but the front most finger groove and a slight indentation behind that choil accomodates that most useful of fingers nicely. For me, the lack of finger grooves makes for faster handling. My knife is finished in Black T and was razor sharp right out of the box. I am impressed.

Willie Boy,

Welcome to the "SE D2 Sifu" club! I have to agree with you completely. This knife just fits. I carry my Carnivore to work alot, but out and about, I carry a Sifu. I think I'm gonna break down and put this one in my pocket for a while, and those stone washed ones are starting to call out my name!

Congrats, Wilie Boy. Thanks for sharing your initial impressions of the SE. Faster handling huh? Nice. I'm attracted to the "Grooved Less" Sifu for its sleeker design and uniqueness over the standard model. Does the new handle and blade material make the knife more blade heavy than the standard version? Is this good or bad in your opinion? Has Rekat gotten around to polishing the G10 edges better to eliminate/minimize fiberglass splinters? Please let us know since we stone-washed blade guys might be waiting many more weeks (months?) before we get ours.

No it never stops. I've got five Sifu's with one each of the SE's coming. I was lucky enough to get two of the first 70, #'s 50 green G10 & 51 black G10, one of the first black T'd, a CF stone washed, and #2 of about 20 Black T with red G10.

I only carry the CF version occasionally. The rest are in a display case and want to go play.

It's a fine line between "a hobby" and "mental illness".

Hi Toothed,
To answer your questions, I have never handled the original SIFU so I can't compare the handling characteristics of the SE to the original. The SE balances right in the "area" of the only remainig finger groove. The knife still shifts the weight toward the grip when gripped normally. Conversion from the natural grip to the reverse grip on the SIFU is difficult for me, compared to the Carnivour. I believe this is due to the length of the grip. When you get yours, I be interested to your insights.

The edges of the G10 seem fine to me. Polished might be a strong word, but they are smooth and a bit shiny. Unlike my Carnivour, the stainless liners on my SIFU and Pocket Hobbbit both show evidence of time spent at a buffing wheel. Both seem refined when compared to my Carnivour. The Carnivour is gritty when opening and the edges, while smooth, have not been polished.

A few more thoughts for Toothed. Regarding my previous comments on the SIFU's balance and conversion to the reverse grip. Maybe its just me, but I don't see the SIFU as a reverse grip implement. Its virtues, it seems to me, stem from the SIFU's overall length. Given its length, the knife is able to open large envelopes quickly and, when not performing mail opening duty, the SIFU should be able to keep an advesary at a distance because to get inside would be costly. For me, to use the SIFU in the reverse grip, would seem to give away the knife's greatest strength. I just don't view this knife as an "inside" knife so conversion to the reverse grip is of little import to me. However, these are just my thoughts. What say others?

"Wow!" is a nice word. Looking forward to opening that white cardboard cylinder.

Willie Boy, thanks for your comments. It's interesting to learn about how others use their Sifu's. Upon hearing that the new Sifu will be arriving soon, some cardboard boxes that I had in my garage have decided to run away from home.

I'm now more serious about finding the "perfect" sheath or holster for the Godzilla of folding knives.
