I posted this over in the ESEE forum but I figured everybody over here would appreciate this just as much so I thought I would toss it up here too.

I had an interview and job offer yersterday and today I accepted a position as a crew leader for next season (summer 2011) with the Montana Conservation Corps on an immersion trail crew. What this means is that I start training in February then in May we get our crew and head out into the backcountry to do trail building and maintenance. The kicker is that we will be gone all summer long, not once coming out of the backcountry until the middle to end of October. We will be carrying everything we need for the 6 months on our backs; tools, clothes, tents, gear, everything except food, we get resupplied with food every 10 days or so.

The beautiful part of this is I will be working in the Bitterroot Valley on the Selway River in the Nez Perce National Forest, outside of Missoula Montana, think "A River Runs Through It". I am so excited 6 Months in the backcountry I cannot wait. But now comes the hard part choosing what gear I will take.

Well I just had to share, have a great day.

Wow, congrats. That sounds like an adventure. Best of luck.

Holy Crap that sounds awesome! How does one sign up for something like that? What knife/knives are you going to take?

Jordan (yep, I'm Jordan too)

I am not the jealous type but now I am. :) Really I'd love a job like that. How did you score it?

congrats :)

interesting that your with the Montana CC and the Selway River and the Nez Perce National Forest are actually in Idaho (albeit close to the Montana border)- we have plenty of trail work in the state to keep lots of trail crews busy

I worked first on a trail crew and later as a Wilderness Ranger for the USFS in the Bob Marshall Complex for three seasons- no doubt about it truly a real dream job :D I remember one summer where I went a full ten day hitch without ever seeing another human!

Have fun and be sure to bring a good camera (along w/ a fishing pole!)

That is great news. Have fun and take lots of pics to share with us when you get back.

Thanks everybody it should be an amazing time, if you can believe it I don't know for sure what knives I am going to take, right now I am leaning towards a ESEE-3 as that is my usual knife of choice and I will have lots of axes and saws laying around for any large chores but I havn't chosen for sure yet.

You can apply for positions like this at http://www.mtcorps.org/join, I have worked for them before and they are great people and a great organization to work for. And yes it is a little weird being in Idaho but MCC works in all of its surrounding states, my last season was spent mostly in WY outside of Yellowstone.

I am definitely going to take a good camera so I can share when I get back, and I don't fly fish yet but I will be getting a fly rod and learning before I head into the woods.

flyfishings not as hard as it looks :)
just takes patience.. and some instinct

add me to the jealous list

wait, they're gonna PAY you to go camping in the wilderness?

you suck! :D
