I just got my new scrapyard dumpster mutt, and what a tank! It should handle about every job I put it through. I will find out!

Nice! I like the looks of the grip. How does the "groovy" part feel, softer or same material as the rest of the handle?

What I've heard is scrapyard's coatings are pretty good, meaning they last longer than many. Also if the coating is on the full blank, then they put on the scales/handles it really retards in corrosion/rust.

Sigh! I just wish they were not so in love with coatings.

So use the knife... wear the coating off. Or, if you want it completely stripped, right away, use a chemical stripper.

"Is the finish under the coating such that only stripping is needed?"

I'm not certain I'm correctly understanding what you are asking, but I think I do. I haven't seen beneath the coating on a Dumpster Mutt, and therefore do not have a definitive answer. Based upon the knives that have been made by the Busse family companies in the past, I would presume that the surface of the knife was roughened, prior to the application of the coating. So, if you remove the coating, I presume you will find a somewhat rough finish.
