For a few months now my RAT-5 has been EDC do all knife but just recently I got my new EDC as a dedicated self defense knife. It's from Mark Terrell and Eric Draven who for a brief time collaborated on some knives. There was only one of these the Typhoid XL made before the relationship ended and they went their seperate ways so as far as I know this is now a one of a kind piece.
The only mod I have done to mine is wrap the handle. It's 11 inches long and made out of D2. Have a look:eek:

how much did that run ya?

Mine was aquired in a trade and I can trace it from Terrell's hands to the first owner to me:D . I know there were several of the typhoids made in the 9inch version and as with my one off they come with a aluminum trainer and nice Kydex sheath. A 9 incher will run you aorund the three bill mark + or - a few dollars depending on where you get it. The 9 incher is similiar but with a more pronounced curve in the Karambit end a seat belt cutter and a ring ripper ( very small blade ) on the finger ring.
I have been to Mark's website and his forum on another site and he is a stand up guy who loves to get input from his customers and is always looking at new designs. He has a wicked looking cleaver rambit.

Very nice. One question - what's the purpose of splitting the edge into two sections? two different grinds?

I really can't speak as to the original idea behind the splitting of the two edges and whether it was for strictly cosmetic reasons ( sickness knives were to be tactical knives with an industrial look ) or blade reasons. Mark and Eric both had there designs incorporated into this blade. I will say this though. As one blade edge is higher than the other I get all the benifits of a recurve edge without the pain in the butt sharpening that normally comes with the recurve edge. To me like a ripper I like it in that upon withdrawing the blade you are doing that much more to open the wound channel which is all that more important in a blade dedicated to self preservation. Also at 11 inches if I choose to use it in such a manner for self preservation I have a dedicated chopping area of the blade. It comes with a trainer and over time training in such a manner it should come as natural.
Now there is always the other side of the coin and I could be totally speaking out of the side of my arse as Mark ( if you visit his website or join USN ) is not one to shy away from trying a new design. You can spot a Busse or Strider design from a mile away ( I AM NOT NOCKING THERE DESIGNS! ) whereas with Mark unless you see his logo or are real familiar with his work you will not be all that sure. He is always pushing the boundaries on what you would expect to see. All his blades are super sharp though and before him I was always ( read always lol ) in favor of the flat grind whereas his knives are double hollow grinds for the most part.

Where do you carry that such that it is an EDC, and do you carry it openly or is it concealed?

Remember to stab the zombies in the ear or the neck, any other place is ineffective. :D

p.s. Thanks for defending the earth's realm, against the forces of the outworld

Most of the time I carry it in between my belt and jeans with a long tshirt that covers it or with it openly displayed and tshirt tucked in but, I have also tried itw and it is not uncomfy. I have paracord for a mercharness type setup but just never really use it.
Florida law has no restrictions on fixed blade length as long as it's openly carried and compared to some fixed blades it's not that big. I also live in a semi-rural area where the occasional knife strapped onto someones hip is not given a second glance.

Now I just need to go shave my chest hair like Kano.:D

While I'm not knocking the design, it seems like an unusual choice for edc. Is this more like a SD backup for a primary, utility-oriented knife?

Torz,
This is my EDC dedicated to self preservation only and nothing else. This is a weapon period. I stopped carrying my RAT-5 as a do all blade as this is a better option for personal protection for me and I have a little SAK knockoff I can use for everyday utility stuff.

I like it but not for self defense (and it's not good for much else). A DA might have a field day with this knife if you had to go to court. It sort of shows "intent to harm". If you use it, make damn sure your ass is REALLY on the line. That's partly why I like my Ritter Grip (or similar knife). It's easy to say it's for opening boxes and cutting up an apple. Call be a "spoil sport" if you like but if it keeps my ass out of jail, that's cool.

This is kinda running off into another thread topic but if you choose to only carry knife A because of the sheeple then you miss out as you will never know the joy of carrying a MT Knife or a Busse or a Jack Crain, Shiva Ki ect, ect.
My knife is legal and to me an excellent hybrid of Karambit and Hawkbill and if I ever have to use it in defense of my own or anothers life I could give a rat's ass ( most likely not a rat's butt at all as all the rats I know carry big knives lol )whether or not the DA feels my knife looks deadly. Any attorney worth his salt would blow the guy out of the water when one can show the lethality of the common pen or pencil. That and Mark is a respected maker who doesn't talk about the lethality of his knives or deanimation techniques involving blood spray and body fluids.

Fine with me whatever you carry. But as soon as you post it, you've opened youself up for comments. That's all I did was comment. Enjoy your knife and if you ever really need to use it, give'm hell with it !!!

Just being honest here .... IMO that's simply an awful design. The interruption in the edge and the sort of 'gut hook' thing would severely limit it's efficiency as either a weapon or for general utility.

However, it should totally offend nearly any and all sheeple, which does give it a certain appeal, I admit. :)

That is the ugliest damn thing I ever saw, lol. Which may or may not be a bad thing, I guess. It definitely looks mean. I don't understand the ridge in the middle of the edge at all. If you're concerned about creating a bigger woud channel when you withdraw the blade from someone, stab 'em with a crow-bar and twist it.
P.S. I don't mean to offend anyone, I just like a cleaner design. But if you're comfortable with it that's all that matters! :)

OMG, Eric Draven, The Crow .... back from the dead and one of the designers! (IIRC that was a handle of Chad Ward on another forum, pretty sharp guy, but still.....)
