I already have way too many Fixed Blade Hunters. Lots of production: Schrade, Camillus, etc. USA, Schlieper, etc. German, 'bout 20 or so Customs ranging from $125-$600. But as a lifelong insomniac, i now often cruise "folding knives" on ebay at 3 am, and this search brings up some fixed blades too, even though i have no idea why.
I usually reward myself with an inexpensive purchase because i like to get presents and nobody else ever gives me any.
So i spent $7.52 plus $2.99 shipping for this "Schrade" Desert Ironwood Eagle Hunter, because it looked neat at 3 am and i can afford the $10.51 for a pressie.
Here's the knife:

In it's sheath:

and it's a real leather, substantial sheath, not the usual offshore flimsy thing:

Duhhhh, It's an Integral ! And feels great in hand and resaonably heavy, but perfectly balanced and hair poppin sharp along the entire blade edge.

It's such a very good knife for such a stupidly low price, i had to post it.
My 2 Randalls arrived duller than a screwdriver; my lovely Customs are all nice but none feel better in hand that this "Schrade". " " because i started this insanity as a Schrade U.S.A. collector so to me "Schrade" properly should refer to a fine old USA manufactured knife. However this knife is plenty good enough to bear any name.
What is the world coming to ?

Probably not the greatest of steel...but so what. That sheath is a good buy for 10 bucks.

Hard to believe a Randall would come dull..

Nice knife though. I dislike the eagle on it, though. Makes it look like a cheap knife.

Nice!!!

Roland,

It is a pleasure to see that you have the energy to find and enjoy sharps at every level of sophistication.

Your posts are always an eye-opening delight.

Thank you,

Mike H.

Seals, the steel might be very good. Did you see the post i made in the Rough Rider thread about field dressing a deer with an RR Jumbo Trapper ? Slickest job ever and blade still sharp at the end. Better than my Custom FBs i usually use. So now i'll have to try this one and i'm gonna bet it stays shaving sharp for a full field dressing (including amputating lower part of legs) of 1 Whitetail deer.
Point is: there are great knives 'out there' and you can't tell by the price. You have to use them to find out.

I got a Queen mountain man folder. The knife looks great. Fit & finish was very good. The back half of the blade was sharp, but the front half out to the tip was dull. A quick trip to the belt grinder and a few swipes on ceramic stone and now the D2 is shaving sharp. I though a knife at that price point and level of finish would come form the factory sharp:confused:??

I'm glad I didn't have to put a bevel on that steel by hand using a stone!

$10 bucks for a knife with a steath.....I pay that much for 1 ceramic Blaze grinding belt:eek:

Looks like you got a real deal on that one Roland. The pattern looks very similar to the "Schrade D'Holder" series they did years back. I always thought those were good lookin' knives.

My reason for posting is to show that there is not necessarily a direct connection between price and quality.
I always thought there was. Makes sense. "you get what you pay for". I kept believing this for about the first 2000 or so knives i bought. But there were just too many exceptions. Some very inexpensive knives like this one are excellent users, and some very expensive knives are just o.k. My next point is that you cannot necessarily tell from pics alone. You have to handle and use the knife to know how good it really is.
Neat that Bruce Culberson posted here because i was also thinking of his knives when i wrote "there are great knives 'out there' and you can't tell by the price". I have 3 knives made by Bruce, all inexpensive but perfect in hand feel & balance with totally even blade grinds and extremely sharp edges. I also have Customs from one of the top makers of "user" FB's. These cost 2-3 times as much and are always snapped up immediately either when posted by maker or for full price on the secondary market. Comparing how fine they feel in hand and how easily they cut, Bruce's knives come out on top. But you can't tell this quality from his pictures (or any pics).
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of very inexpensive import FBs listed on ebay. Some are very good user knives like this "Schrade". I just got lucky here. I have bought a number of these cheap imports are a few are top notch, but it always came as a surprise.
I no longer dismiss every low priced knife and in doing so have picked up some excellent user knives.
If you are still in disbelief, buy one of these "Schrade" Eagle Hunters and for a few dollars you can then decide for yourself.

Sometimes hard to believe it myself. I have a lot of really nice production USA made knives, new and vintage. I carry my RR 3 3/8" single blade San Mai with a damascus drop point blade more than any of them. Well made, sharp, and I love the pattern.
