What a week! First I get my Osborn on Monday, now this! If you can find nicer people to know or get knives from than the Jones Bros. or Gene Osborn, I promise you, they'll have wings and a halo :)
Over the last couple of years, Barry Jones and I have emailed back and forth and though we haven't met in person yet, I consider him a good friend of mine. I've bought a couple of knives from them that were already made, but decided a few months ago to do it right.
We started talking about my favorite style of knife, the classic Loveless style drop point hunter. Basically, what I told them was that I wanted the Jones Bros. interpretation of knife, but I had to have 3 things: tapered tang, stag handle with red liner, and stainless guard. Barry, being a draftsman, sent me a drawing of the knife. After a very minor change we were agreed on the design. Barry stated that he had some 440V(CPM 560V) that he was eager to try, and I said go for it. We communicated every step of the way, when blade was ground, heat treated, guard soldered, etc. I wanted a leather sheath, pouch style, which is the only way to go with this style of knife.
Well, the knife arrived today! Sometimes when you wait a while for a knife and talk about it alot when you finally get it there's almost a sort of letdown. Not with this baby!
Ok, I've babbled on enough. Here is is: 3 3/4" 440V blade, tapered tang, stag handle with red liners,416 stainless guard, pouch style leather sheath, this is a handmade custom!

This is the way to buy a knife! Check out Barry and Phillip Jones for exceptionally crafted knives at great prices! You will not be dissapointed.
Thank you guys!!!
Dave

Dave - that is a very sweet piece! Actually, Barry let me have a sneak peek at that photo a couple weeks back :) I agree with what you said about the Joneses. I've one knife already from them that I really like and am looking forward to taking delivery of a folder from them in a couple months  Thanks for sharing!

When I read a TK article on the Jones bros. a few years back, I instantly wanted the large Camp/Fighter. They do some serious pieces that look like they could take all kinds of punishment. Nice hunter you got there too!

Major score, Lifter.

The Jones' did you right....brushed finish, drop point in 440V. But that is some seriously primo stag you got on 'at 'ere huntin' knife. Especially in light of the Indian induced shortage ... they pulled out the good stash for you.

And you know what, since you collaborated with the maker on the design sketch, I'm betting that would be one of the last knives you'd sell if tough financial times hit.

I have a Dave Broadwell custom hunter with primo stag like yours... Norris damascus, built after back-and-forth with sketches, and it's an heirloom IMHO. Cain't be had at any price (well ...)...

rdangerer is correct about the stag....The Jones bros. pulled that stag OFF THE TOP SHELF! Great looking interpretation of the Loveless style drop point hunter.

I would be interested in hearing how the 440v holds up when used for processing this fall.

Great looking knife - Enjoy :D

Thanks guys. I love all my knives but there's really something special about being involved in the planning stages and also getting to know the maker.
If you've ever read any of my posts about Jones knives, I always say the first thing that comes to mind is 'sturdy'. Their basic camp and fighting knives are among the best made, period. I know that Barry considered this a nice change and a challenge from the tactical realm, and I can tell you they more than met the challenge. I also love leather sheaths, and though it's been awhile since they made one, it is first class. They've been making knives since 1986, yet their prices are better than most of the newer knifemakers.
As I said before, I wanted their interpretation of the Loveless style. While Bob goes with hollow grind and mirror finish, since their specialty is flat grind and satin finish, that's what we went with, and it rocks!
Rdangerer, it's getting harder and harder to find good stag. I was able to get a few pair of stag scales at last year's ECCKS, but Barry was able to get this particular pair from a fellow forumite. I'm down to one pair of 5" scales for a future knife. Unfortunately, I've already seen a pair advertised for about double the usual cost on the trading forums. One thing I started doing is asking the makers to thin the stag from the underside as much as possible before assembly, so as to keep as much of the 'bark' as possible. I think we need to organize a trip to India to get them to see the error of their ways regarding stag ban,LOL. I was told by Masecraft supply that they've been piling up the stag there and burning it!:( BTW, sure would like to see a pic of that Broadwell. David is another maker that is a really great guy and we've been emailing back and forth for awhile about different topics. I've got one of his knives and there are definitely more in my future.
Dex, let us see that folder when you get it. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.
Ok, enough chat, I got a new knife here that needs playing with :D

Hi Guys,

I am really glad that you all like the knife that I(we) made for Dave. I was very nervous about making the knife since I had never done one with stag scales on a tapered tang. As Dave mentioned, it was a welcome change of pace from the usual tactical knives that Phillip and I make. Working with Dave on this project was a real pleasure. All customers should be as nice and easy going as Dave is.

I want to mention that we did not pull the stag of the top shelf. We did not have any stag that was big enough to do the knife. I searched and searched. I must have called all the stag suppliers in business and had no luck. Finally I was contacted by Charles Sauer of Montana Knifehandle Supply. He said that he had one set of scales the size I was looking for. I believe he said that they had been sitting on the back shelf for years collecting dust. Anyway, we discussed the price and made the deal. I think that both us and Dave came out on the better end of the deal (more Dave than us). Charles is a top-notch guy to deal with. He gets my recomendation. You can get to his website from one of the links at the top of the forum pages.

Now, If we could just get this embargo thing over with so I can make more knives with stag.
