so my brother got this old japanese carving knife for me, i think its pretty cool. After going over it with my polishing compounds and my handy dandy japanese water stones and about 15 minutes of honing, i can now shave, or hold up a piece of paper and without really supporting it, cut it.

I saw a similar (if not identical) knife for sale from Lee Valley carving tools. Looks really neat! Very traditional looking...not that I know anything about traditional Japanese knives. :o

pretty sure its the same knife. It's in with all the greats now, my flex cut and beebe. Not sure how something like this could even compare to those but it'll be good for heavier removal.
 
Those HIGONOKAMI are decent knives.

The "blue" steel ones can take a pretty wicked sharp edge.
