After some help from fine folks here I've built a vise. Not the prettiest thing and it still needs some cleaning and a good coat of paint but I tried it a little and I love it. Much faster to rotate the knife when working on the handle.

Thanks again.

Looks good I just made one similar to that about a week ago. I will post up pics later. What did you use for the wood insert. I haven't put that piece in yet but was going to turn a piece of wood on the lathe.

That's what I did Burton, turned an piece of wood (an old lamp I believe) in the lathe. (I hate to turn wood on my Southbend 9A). Cut it in 2 and grinded to a wedge shape.

Looks good. Actually significantly better than the "Moran" vise I got from Riverside because it looks like the first section will actually rotate 360 degrees.

What size pipe and bolts did you use? If not too much trouble could you PM or email me the measurements or let me know if there is info available on the net as to how to make one of these.

Sorry Phyl can't help you.

Charles, I'll get some kind of simple plan with measurements online at the beginning of next week if you want.

I like the puck idea. Why didn't I think of that? They may revoke my Canadian Passport now. ;)

Here are a few links to knife vises. The first one is along the lines of Pad's.

My biggest challenge is figuring out how to support the blade from underneath while filing. Terry Primos describes something, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3009481&postcount=5, but I don't understand it without the photos. Wish someone could explain it to me.

Farmer Phyl: google 'Greenpete's Knife Making pt2of4', best I can think of off the top of my head for 'clamp'+'drawfile'

Hi Y'all,

This thread is perfect for me. I'm just starting to put something like this to together too.

I'm also trying to figure out how to best support the blade when extended from the vise so it can be draw filed.
Any one got any ideas?

Thanks, Phil

I would mortise out a slot in the mating surface of each wooden block, into which would lay a 1 1/4" X 1/4" bar of steel, about a foot long. The bars could be covered on their mating surfaces with a piece of leather, and could slide in and out freely. Extend the lower bar toward you with the tang in the vise and the blade laying on the lower bar.

I would love to own one of those pool ball vise but HOLY SH** are they over priced! Gonna have to find someone to make me one.

Excellent! Man, I'm going to have to spring for a welder one of these days. I've been threatening that for years... Here's more inspiration! Thanks for the kick in the pants.

Speaking of billiard balls, any hints on drilling them?

Get that welder Dave. It is a very handy tool. A little like the lathe for me. You don't use it very often but when you do need it, there is no substitute. I got a small Miller 135. Love it.

And as you can see in the pics, you don't even have to know how to weld. ;)

I need a welder, too....im a cheapskate, though, so ill continue scowering craigslist and the NH yardsales until one comes my way CHEAP.
