My new knifemaking series...

Great videos! I agree with Psycho, I wish I would have seen that a long time ago.

What information can you give us on your grinders? The wheels look homemade - plywood maybe?

Almost everything is homemade, plywood wheels included... As I temper these files to mid 50's rc, they're still quite hard. I tried to use hard rubber wheels, but when the belt got just a little bit dull, it pushed off, and didn't grind/cut. So I have to use a wheel with a more solid backing to make the belt cut. I'm one of the lucky ones with several years (actually almost 3 decades) of machine shop experience in making/fabricating tooling, I built these all myself. If you were to buy a Bader for knife making, you'd spend , what, $800-$1,200 on a good grinder... I have 3 and around $300-$400 in the whole set... Motors - $10-$20ea yard sale specials, Framework $100+ in 2" angle iron and fasteners, Pillow blocks free (made them myself) out of the scrap pile where I used to work (when I had a regular day job), 2x4's and plywood, electrical, and misc. $100 from Lowes... etc... I enjoy making a tool if I think I can do it (especially if it's going to save me a few bucks)...

I'm glad you all enjoyed the vids! It was my first attempt, I would have changed a few things if I would have thought it out a bit more...

Sweet, loved the look into your shop and how you make a knife. The grinders are really sweet especially the horizontal.
Thanks for the look.

Great vids  my only problem is no respirator. c.y.a and your lungs.

Great Video, I really enjoyed watching you go through your process. Thanks for Sharing this.

Is that a block of wood with a magnet inside that you are holding the knives with while you grind?

Ryan, I've seen a jig like that before. I believe that there are just some metal rods or nails poking out of the wood block for the blank to rest on while he makes his passes, keeping everything lined up. Michael might chime in with more details, but that's what it looked like to me:)

dam you knock that s out quick! Made short work out of those swedges. I havent built up the guts to try those yet

Sticky,
When I was about to attempt my first swedge, I was scared to death. I kept thinking about all the time I had spent grinding the bevel, profiling, would I ruin a perfectly good knife, etc........but in the end you just have to dive in there and go for it! You will be happy you did.
