I wanted to post a picture of my new bowie by ABS Mastersmith, Roger Massey. It hasn't made it to me yet, but I should have it in the next couple of weeks. The only things that I can tell you about it are that the blade is 8" and is in the style of a Scagel bowie from the Dr. Lucie collection. The guard is stainless steel and it has a crown stag, leather washer and spacer handle. I am not even sure what steel was used for the blade, but as soon as Roger gets back to me I will let you folks know.

I would also like to thank Brett Gatlin for taking this photo and sending it to me. He sent me some more and I will post them later.

You sure have something to look forward to.
That's superb.
I'm looking forward to more pictures of this one.

So far so good! It appears there is some color in the blade. Very cool if so. (Looking forward to more details, as you are...!)

I don't recall ever seeing such a swell in a leather handle. This is a treat. As I would expect, you got a serious custom knife coming your way! :D Congrats, Keith.

That's very cool. I don't think I've ever seen a Scagel-style knife from Roger before. I don't doubt that you're going to love it. He's a heckuva talented bladesmith.

That's a real beauty. I like the rounded area near the guard and the very gentle upsweep to the blade. A truly re-imagined Scagel style blade.

That Is Beautiful..Congrats, definately worthy enough to keep company with your Newton!!

The color is in the photos. For some reason, they have a tint to them that the originals did not have. Not that my skill is the best anyway.

I will say that the knife is super clean, and can stand in any collection! Just like any of Roger's work that I have seen. Great score Keith!

Great knife, Keith!
It is very Scagel-like, and at the same time, keeps an identity of its own.

Beautiful Keith! Man I would love to see a shot of your entire collection, Wadaya Say?!

When the Massey gets here I will see what I can do.

When Roger and I were discussing what I wanted this knife to be, I gave him the bacic outline of what I was looking for. I really liked the shape of the Scagel blade, but thought the knife would look better with a fighter guard and a stacked leather/metal spacer/coloured spacer/crown stag handle. After deciding on the basic design features I let Roger know that I wanted him to take it from there. I personally think he did a great job.

Something interesting happened during the making of this knife. My idea was for a standard symmetrical fighter guard. We never discussed any changes, but after Roger mentioned to me that he had already attached the guard I started to think that I would have preferred an asymmetrical guard instead. I realized that it was way too late to ask, so I just put it out of my head. Then I get the photos from Brett (did I say thank you, by the way? :D ) and it has an asymmetrical guard. I'm sure Roger figured it would look better that way and as far as I am concerned he was correct. It seems that along with being a great bladesmith, Roger is also a mind reader. He is a very talented man indeed.

Thanks Roger, I really love this knife. I want my collection of bowies to encompass as many different styles as possible and so far I have managed to stay on this path. This knife adds to the diversity and quality of my collection.

Well, I have had my Massey for a few days now and figured that I should give you guys my impressions.

This is not a fancy knife. It is however, tremendously well made. My hand fits into the handle perfectly and I really like the slightly blade heavy balance that it has. The overall fit and finish, as is to be expected, is excellent. The sheath it came with is simple yet very well made. I find myself a little surprised by the fact that although it is nowhere near my most expensive knife, it is my favorite. If you guys are able to stand the wait, I highly recommend that you get yourself a knife made by this great bladesmith. You won't regret it.

No photo of my collection yet. Maybe in the next few days.

Keith, yeah man, my number should be up around October. :D Been racking my brain lately trying to come up with the details. Just hope it turns out as nice as yours!

Well, you have to know that I love this knife. I have yet to see a knife made by Roger Massey that I didn't love. The man is simply one of the best Bladesmiths out there, as well as being one of the world's nicest guys. Good score!

Sure, go ahead and tell ERVERYBODY why don't you!? Now the wait will be even LONGER!! Sheesh.

Just kidding. ;) Roger is as talented as he is personable. His knives offer outstanding value. Getting on his list is a smart move that even a dummy like me can figure out.

Enjoy the knife Keith and thanks for the update.

Cheers,

Roger
