the wife and i were visiting an old friend of ours while we were out snowmobile riding last sunday, he's 68 yrs young and makes knives and sheaths and such. we were talking about sheath making (which he is going to teach me to do) and he was showing me some of his latest work. then i asked about an axe sheath so he showed me one he made for his elk hunting/woods bumming hatchet. lo and behold it was an old norlund hatchet. while i was marvling at it and drooling on it he said he thought that he had another head just like that "somewhere in the shed". we (he) found it and said "here ya' go". i tried to pay him for it but he would have none of that.
he said he'd had it for 30 yrs or so and it was given to him by an old man that had never used it. thus it has never been used, so it seems (the edge looks factory). he said that he had to clean it up a bit when he got it because it was a little rusted.
it means more to me than anything because such an old friend gave it to me. i will hold on to this one for the rest of my life. now i've just got to find a handle:D enjoy the pics:cool: thanks

Great pics! You have a generous friend, he gave you a great hatchet. My Norlund hatchet is by far my favorite hatchet.

Lucky you! They're great little hatchets. I bought one in the 70's. As popular as they are now, I wish I'd bought a couple dozen.

You are a fortunate man to have such a friend and be given a quality old hatchet head such as that. Enjoyed the pics.

Nice gift.....Great looking head ! Lets see it again when you get her done.

I have one of those and it's a great little ax. I personally like mine on a slender straight handle.

I have two of these...great hatchets. Both of mine have the original handles too....if you want pics or templates let me know.

For those of you that have experience with Norlunds - for general everyday use, do you like those better than your more convential axe head, say like a dayton or michigan? Just wondering, I don't have a lot of experience with Norlunds.

Not all Norlunds are the Hudson Bay pattern, only the single bit hatchet and one of their boys axe models. I have several Norlunds with other head patterns, for example a boys axe with a Dayton style head. I'll see if I can post some pics later.

Nice item and a reminder of a friend.

Don't expect to go to the hardware and buy a head that will fit the eye without lots of shaving/filing.
